Taking a set from Rafa Nadal at Roland Garros is a monumental feat.  Taking three from him is like scaling Everest.

Night at the Museum 2

by Geoff J

Saw it today. I was a little surprised that I didn’t hate it. In fact I not only didn’t hate it, I discovered that it made me laugh on more than one occasion.

This movie serves its purpose well I thought. It is a silly family film sort of like the silly Disney family films I used love as a kid in the 70′s. We went as a family and everyone enjoyed themselves. My nearly-5-year-old did crawl onto my lap as the action heated up but it was tame enough for her not to be traumatized. The plot is sort of moot so I won’t bother recapping it. Suffice it to say museum stuff comes alive again and hilarity ensues while reality is permanently suspended. The little kids loved the slapstick scenes like the ones with Ben Stiller and monkeys slapping each other. I laughed out loud at the conflict scene between Stiller and Jonah Hill as Brandon (or Brundon) the security guard midway through the movie. Hank Azaria was pretty funny throughout as the lisping villain and there was an especially funny improv bit between with Azaria and Stiller where they bickered like school children near the end of the film. Owen Wilson was his regular affable and fairly amusing self throughout.

SNL recap/review 5-16-09

by Geoff J

Season Finale. Will Ferrell hosts, Green Day musical guest.

Intro — Cheney and Bush: Will Ferrell makes a Bush appearance. Some good stuff here.

Monologue — Will goofing on himself as a serious actor.

Fake Commercial: Will is local attorney who sues dogs. This is one was originally from several years ago.

Skit — Lawrence Welk: This is a recurring skit. Kristen kills it as Judy the crazy, deformed singing sister. Hilarious with the fake baby hands. Will plays it straight. Awesome.

SNL recap/review 5-9-09

by Geoff J

Since I record these things anyway I figured I would review a few for you all. Justin Timberlake hosted this week.

Intro: Will Forte doing a Tim Geitner spoof. Mocking the alleged stress tests that concluded this week. The gag was that the stress test had a written portion. Citibank mostly answered “Geitner sucks” on every answer. Elicited a few laughs.

Monologue — Justin Timberlake: Rolled out in all black. Does bluesey musical intro. Doing the backstage interaction bit. As much as I feel disdain for N’Sync I have to admit this guy can sing.

Fake Commercial: “Mom celebrity translator”. Moms can’t pronounce celebrity names — translates for you. Made me laugh out loud. (more…)

Idol: Rank ‘Em 1-to-3

by Rusty

3) Adam
2) Danny
1) Kris

I don’t know what the judges were talking about when lauding Adam’s performances. Neither of them were particularly good. I thought his arrangement of One was terrible, and his version of Cryin’ was exactly like Aerosmith’s. Danny did alright, but his vocals on You Are So Beautiful were not as good as the judges were saying. Sure they were fine, but not even close to Joe Cocker. Kris was the star tonight, especially that second song. I still think Adam is going to win, but tonight’s performance made me almost cringe.

Movie Review: Star Trek

by Supergenius

Brief review, more to come tomorrow (after I see it in the morning again):

IT WAS AWESOME.

Best Trek movie? Possibly. Neck-and-neck with ST:II. Great acting, great script, great effects. Everything worked. Nothing didn’t. All the actors did a great job, especially Pine, Quinto and Pegg, but Urban and Bana were also really enjoyable, maybe the best either has ever been. Some surprises, some new elements mixed with old. I recommend to fans that they read the Star Trek: Countdown comic before viewing, but it’s not necessary.

Mrs Supergenius says: “I really enjoyed the movie. There was enough character development to make the shooting and fighting bearable. It was really fun, even with my little Trek expertise, to see these characters discover elements of themselves that we have known for years. I would pay to see it again. I would pay to see it again tomorrow, if I didn’t have to pay for a babysitter.”

LOST: “Follow the Leader”

by BTD Greg

But who is the leader?

The full post is going to be delayed at least 24 hours due to business travel. Sorry about that. Meanwhile, I’ve posted some of the usual links and feel free to use this thread to discuss the penultimate episode of season 5. I’ll join you in about a day after I’ve had a chance to see it myself.

So, no spoilers in the body of the post (yet) but other good stuff awaits you after the jump.

UPDATED: the episode recap and analysis is now up.

Oh Pandora.com, how I love thee!

by Geoff J

I am kicking myself.

Why have I not used Pandora.com more in the past? I have known about the service for years, I just never got around to using it much. But recently I remembered it and started a few stations. I’m completely addicted now. Seriously, this thing rocks. I have 10 stations now and with a little tweaking every single one of them rules.

I generally start my stations around a band and then customize with song voting as I go. Here are my stations as of this week:

The English Beat Radio
Bad Religion Radio
Michael Franti and Spearhead Radio
G Love and Special Sauce Radio
Steel Pulse Radio
The Ting Tings Radio
The Bravery Radio
The Smiths Radio
Matisyahu Radio
The Raconteurs Radio

Is anyone else addicted to Pandora? What are your favorite stations?
