Movies

First Avenger: Captain America now has a director, Joe Johnston. Previous directing credits include Hidalgo, Jurassic Park 3, and October Sky.

Brett Ratner, who is apparently working on Beverly Hills Cop 4, is deciding whether or not to take up a Conan reboot in the mean time. Any other 80′s movie franchises we need to remake or reboot? Teen Wolf 3 perhaps?

Eric Snider asks, after an Obama election, is the world ready for a black James Bond?

A rumor via AICN, Tarantino has offered Ennio Morricone the chance to score his upcoming film, Inglorious Basterds.

Remake Alert! The Wizard of Oz? In CG? Directed by John Boorman (Deliverance)? I will refrain from any pig squealing jokes…

Remake alert! The Expendables, starring and directed by Sylvester Stallone.

Remake alert! Clash of the Titans directed by Louis Leterrier who helmed the last Hulk film.

I suppose it would be more noteworthy to have an Original Idea Alert.

TV

Confirmed. Lost to premiere on Jan 21st. The show is also moving to Wednesdays at 9/8c. First two episodes, running back to back, are titled “Because You Left” and “The Lie.”

Until Lost returns, this is the best show on TV right now.

NBC doesn’t want to give up on Knight Rider, so they are dropping some cast members and bringing it closer to the original. I’m expecting KARR to make an appearance soon.

WB’s The Grayson’s? Done.

New trailer for Joss Whedon’s Dollhouse. Don’t get too hopeful, Fox is sending it to Friday nights.

Get your BSG props before it’s too late.

Saw this happen this morning. Awkward.

Don’t forget, Top Chef 5 premieres Wednesday night on Bravo.

  1. Here’s an Original Idea for a movie: it’s about a world where only five stories exist, and they are just recycled over and over again, but then some crazy director comes along and tries to make a ‘new’ idea. There’s all this opposition from everyone else of course, and that’s where the drama comes in. But then—and here’s where I’m totally original—the director discovers that the world he’s in—the one perceived by humans—is actually a simulated reality created by advanced apes that took over from humans and use the recycled movie ideas to pacify and subdue the human population while their bodies’ heat and electrical activity are used as an energy source. Oh, and when the real humans’ bodies die they are recycled into a green food tablet that is fed back to the humans.

  3. Is there a better composer than Morricone? No.

  4. October Sky is a good movie. Those others are meh.

If they remake Clash of the Titans, will they be doing the Harryhausen effects? Because people didn’t and don’t watch it for the acting.

  5. Joe Johnston doesn’t stand out as a director for Captain America. We’ll see. That’ll be a tricky one to pull off.

    Ratner destroys all he touches.

Morricone is still alive? I honestly didn’t know that. Wow.

If they are doing rewrites why not redo crappy movies with a lot of promise? (Well, I guess Clash of the Titans counts) But seriously we need some more original ideas.

  6. this is the best show on TV right now.

Not on my TV–I get Dish Network. Until FNL returns to broadcast TV, I nominate Eli Stone as the best show.

  7. I watch Eli with my wife each week, and it was good up until last week when the vision turned into a deus ex machina. The same thing happened with last year’s Journeyman.

  8. Who could possibly take over as Conan? There can be only one.

As for Meredith…why exactly did the Today Show hire her for?

  9. If you are going to do Conan I’d suggest Zack Snyder – not that I think he’d do it after he did 300. But he would be a good match. Especially if he “aped” the art of Frank Frazetta who did a lot of the covers in the heyday of Conan’s rediscovery.

  10. “Because You Left” is an awesome, awesome (awesome) way to start season 5.

  11. Greg,
What are you implying regarding what you know?

    Comment by John C. — November 10, 2008 @ 8:11 pm

  12. I’m not implying anything because this season, I have no insider information.

But I am inferring from the title (and from the trailer) that the season 5 pilot will dive right into what happened to the people on the island when it went poof, and what the consequences of the Oceanic Six leaving the island were (which will explain Jack’s insistence at the end of season 3 to Kate that they have to go back.) In other words, they are getting right to the point, and everything is coming together.

  13. According to Wiki, KARR has already (sort of) made an appearance in the new Knight Rider–except this time he’s a transformer!

I’ve never actually watched this show. Sometimes, you don’t actually have to drink that old milk to realize that it’s gone bad.

  14. Okay, this doesn’t really belong here, but the comments to the old Guns n’ Roses thread have closed, so here goes: Rolling Stone has it’s official review of Chinese Democracy, and they like it a lot.

I doubt I’ll buy it (I never even owned a copy of Appetite of Destruction). But what really stood out for me was that Tommy Stinson (formerly of the Replacements!, as in “Tommy Gets his Tonsils Out”) plays bass on almost ever track. I had no idea.

  15. And, Chuck is the best show this season. =) I do like Eli Stone, though.

  16. BTD Greg,

I’ll admit to knowing that KITT is something of a shape shifting car in this version, though I guess it never becomes an anthropomorphic robot.
