The year’s best music? Blitzen Trapper.

by Supergenius

Maybe it’s not the best album of 2008 – that title is still open to contention, between Sigur Ros, Vampire Weekend, TV on the Radio… even Coldplay! But Blitzen Trapper’s Furr is a name worth considering in your top albums of the year. Here’s why. (more…)

TV DVDs You Need to Watch

by Clark

OK, so TV right now kind of sucks with a few exceptions. (Tonight’s South Park on the fight between Goths and Vampires was awesome) So it seems time to subscribe to Netflix and pick up the TV shows that you never saw. So what are they? Here’s my list.

Interview: The Duncan Brothers

by Supergenius

Any avid Youtube viewer is familiar with the short films and commercials done by The Duncan Brothers, a pair of Seattle transplants now living in Los Angeles. If you’re not, here’s their magnum opus, “Overdrift” (non-youtube link here):

I had the opportunity of interviewing Teh Duncs the other day. The mysteries of dinos and drift racing await, beyond the fold: (more…)

Quantum of Solace: The Discussion

by Clark

OK, I won’t call this a review. More of a discussion. I’ll not put any spoilers in here but I’d lay good odds as the discussions in the comments get going there will be a few.

Here’s my thoughts:

Heroes Redux: In Which Scudworth Goes Scientific All Over Everybody’s Ass

by Scudworth

I am nothing if not a man of science.

Observe:

Hypothesis 1: The dramatic drop in overall quality during Season 2 of Heroes was due primarily to the impact of the writers’ strike.

Falsifiable Prediction (logically entailed by Hypothesis 1): With the writers’ strike well behind us, Season 3 should bring about an improvement in the writing and overall quality of the Heroes franchise.

Data Set: Heroes 301-308

Conclusion: Hypothesis 1 is demonstrably and manifestly false.

Yours truly,
Cinnamon J. Scudworth

Van Morrison does Astral Weeks: Two Nights Only

by Susan M

When you hear the music ringing in your soul
And you feel it in your heart and it grows and grows
It comes from the backstreet, rock & roll
And the healing has begun

The whole thing seems so surreal. I still can’t believe it happened. Van Morrison performed all of Astral Weeks at the Hollywood Bowl, two nights only, for an upcoming DVD release. And I saw it!

007: Excited?

by Clark

So I have to ask. Are you excited about next week’s A Quantum of Solace? I was, although my excitement has been tempered somewhat by the lukewarm reviews that have come out. (Basically saying there’s almost too much action and not enough charm) There’s also a worry that they are doing too much Bourne aping.

End of an Era

by Greg

The past eight years have been decent for protest songs, and I suppose the next four, at least, will be less so. It’s time to look back on the best Bush/Iraq protest music, and see if we can come up with a list that surpasses the Reagan era (should be easy) and challenges the Nixon era (not likely).

Here are my nominations:

The most violent movie of all time

The Passion of the Christ (2004), written and directed by Mel Gibson

I tried to watch it last night, in high-definition on Showtime. I couldn’t make it through the first flaying. Instead of presenting Jesus as the Prince of Peace, I couldn’t help but notice a slant toward the serious sadistic side of normal Christian movie watchers. More blood! yeah, that’s the ticket. And by the way, Jesus in this movie seems to be super blood man, able to regenerate gallons of blood in between each torture session, making it better for the bloodlusting audience. This is the grindhouse version of the Passion.

This movie is merit-free.
