Best Halloween Songs

by Supergenius

This is probably the only day of the year when any of these songs are even remotely interesting to listen to.

OK, some of you probably have Halloween playlists already, but here’s a few gems to get the discussion rolling: (more…)

Something Amazingly Cool for Halloween

by Ivan

I wanted to make this a Link of the Day, but I can’t figure out how to do that.

Instead - feast your eyes and ears upon:

Stan Lee reads “The Raven.”

Two great tastes that go great together.

I can’t believe it’s Halloween and nobody posted this one. Come on guys. Get in the spirit of things. (No pun intended)

The HD wars are over.

by Supergenius

I largely agree with this analysis at ZD Net, which claims that the real outcome of the high-definition wars is that both sides lost. HD-DVD is dead, and Blu-Ray is wasting away on life support — soon it will go the way of laserdisc, something to be found only in specialty stores at exorbitant prices. Thanks, Sony.

Best Threepeats

by Clark

Tim mentioned an L A Times story that that quoted Christopher Nolan asking, “How many good third movies in a franchise can people name?”

So let’s put it to you. How many threepeats are there? I don’t necessarily mean a trilogy. But ones that had at least three solid films in a row.

Concert Review: R.E.M., October 24, 2008, Dallas, Texas

by BTD Greg

REM live in Dallas, Texas, Oct. 24, 2008

On the way to see REM, I was apprehensive. Not because I wasn’t excited. I hadn’t seen REM live since the Monster tour in 1995. No, mostly it was election-year burnout. I was steeling myself for the inevitable political rant, at a point when I had pretty much sworn off all political discussions with anyone from either side. In retrospect, I shouldn’t have worried. Although the show was plenty political, there was only a single rant, short and sweet, buried late in the show’s encore. And REM’s saving grace has always been (for me, anyway) that their songs are mostly obscure and elliptic enough to ingratiate without beating fans over the head with an overt message.

Star Wars Clone Wars: actually pretty good!

by The Brit

George Lucas’s cruel ravaging* of poor Indy was only the latest in a long line of crimes committed by the bearded one. Thankfully the new Lucasfilm series Star Wars: The Clone Wars features George only in an executive role. That’s probably why it’s good. (more…)

KB: 360 (a weekly roundup of TV, movie, music, and sports)

by Tim J

Seeing how KB has no sidebar, apart from the ironically named “link of the day”, I’ve decided to give something a shot. Each week (hopefully) I will be offering a recap of recent news relating to the world of Kulturblog. If you have a link or a story that you think could be included, feel free to email at tjacob78@yahoo.com. (more…)

Kings of Leon in LA

by MCQ

The Kings of Leon lived up to their hype and delivered a riveting 90 minute set to a star-studded sell-out crowd at LA’s sparklingly beautiful Nokia Theatre last night, where they appeared with The Stills and We are Scientists.  There are few concerts in a venue like this (way too nice for a rock concert, really) where a band keeps the audience interested enough that no one ever sits down from the opening minute through the encore, and they just keep jumping around and dancing, but the band pulled it off in this show.  They actually seemed a bit out of place in this setting, but with the crowd cheering their every move at full volume, they eventually settled down and seemed to feel at home.  It’s a bit of vindication for this band to get this much attention at a large venue in a place like LA, because up to now, most of their support has come from Europe, and they have been relatively unknown in the U.S.  After finally seeing them live, I like them even even more than I did before.  If you have a chance to see them, don’t miss it.

Revisionist hits

by BTD Greg

Over in the comments of Susan’s blog, we’re discussing what I’ll call revisionist hits. This came up in the context of a story Susan told about attending a Soundgarden/Love & Rocket’s concert wearing a Tones On Tail t-shirt. This reminded me of the fact that I keep seeing a car commercial that uses Tones On Tail’s “hit” song “Go!” I put hit in scare quotes because, of course, Tones On Tail (the Bauhaus and Love & Rocket’s spin-off) didn’t have any actual hits and, although I can’t seem to find a way to document this, I seriously doubt that “Go!” ever charted. Still, it’s been used enough on ’80s compilations and movie soundtracks, what with its memorable thumping baseline and its catchy “ya ya ya ya” verse, that if you didn’t know any better, you might think it was a popular tune in its time, so much so that a car company can now use its cache of nostalgia to sell cars to suburbanites.

Famous People Your Age

by Geoff J

Which famous people are your age? I figured we could try a little exercise and name some famous people who are no more than one month younger or older than you are (just to keep the lists from getting too large). For instance, I was born in April 1970 and here are some of the famous people born a month before or after me in 1970 (I only included the names I knew readily):

* Mariah Carey, American singer
* Vince Vaughn, American actor, writer, and producer
* Rick Schroder, American actor
* Redman, American rapper
* Greg Eklund, American drummer (Everclear)
* Jason Lee, American skateboarder and actor
* Andre Agassi, American tennis player
* Uma Thurman, American actress
* Will Arnett, Canadian actor
* Mike Weir, Canadian golfer
* Gabriela Sabatini, Argentine tennis player
* Tina Fey, American writer, comedian, and actress
* Naomi Campbell, English model and actress
* Jamie Kennedy, American actor and comedian
* Joseph Fiennes, English actor

Not a bad list I guess. I thought some of these people were older than that but maybe it just shows that I think of myself as younger than I really am…

Who’s on your “same age” list?

The TV Season Thus Far

by Clark

OK some shows haven’t premiered yet. (Life on Mars is starting in 5 minutes for instance and Lost hasn’t started yet) But a few shows have been on long enough to form an opinion. So here’s your chance to rant or rave.

I will say that after a frankly amazing run at the beginning of the century TV has seriously tapered off in quality and how compelling they are. Even the shows I like have something lacking that wasn’t there a few years ago. I watch but I just don’t look forward the way I have in past years.

Opeth, High on Fire, Baroness @ the Wiltern, L.A., 10-07-08

by Susan M

This show was at the Wiltern, which is a sucky venue for a show like this. It`s a bigger-sized theater. I prefer my metal at small all ages clubs where if you`re against the stage you`re in danger of having the band step on you or stupid drunk guys spitting beer on you. None of this sitting-in-a-balcony, watching-from-afar crap.

So yeah, I got balcony seats. (more…)
