I’m with SMB3, even though I fully admire and respect the foundation upon which it stands. It’s just more fun - flying through the air as a hybrid racoon (who comes up with this $hit, anyway?) totally rocks.
And SMB2 was a major let-down for me (even though I wasted countless hours on it) - thanks for not including it in the vote.
SMB2 is technically not a SMB game. In Japan SMB2 was simply a much harder version of SMB 1 with new worlds but the same gameplay. The US version of SMB2 is actually a totally unrelated Japanese game that they took the original characters out of and added the Mario characters.

BrianJ, my son is singing your praises for posting that link. I finally had to drag him off the computer before his fingers froze in game-playing position on the keyboard.
I can’t see youtube at work - if it’s the video of the guy who beats SMB3 in just a matter of minutes, I’ve read it’s clearly a ‘bot (non-human) that’s playing.
shazbraz: glad to know that someone “benefited” from my efforts. I think that any votes for SMB3 made after I posted the link should be disqualified: if you truly liked SMB3, then you’d be too preoccupied playing it to vote, no?
I’m sticking with the 8-bit original. It’s amazing to me how much play this game gets on our Wii at home. Our kids love it. We have SMB3 and SMWorld as well, but this is the one that everyone comes back to. Even though it’s very primitive, the game play on the original SMB is just hard to beat. Somehow, the sequels feel sort of “soft” to me. Hard to describe exactly. Plus, the theme music to SMB is a classic.
I will also admit to liking Super Mario Bros 2(USA version) the best. I always have a soft spot for the “oddballs” in a long-running series. Zelda 2 is tied with Majora’s Mask as my favorite Zelda game for the same reason.
I vote for “vs. Super Mario Bros” which is the original arcade version. It is basically a more difficult version than the NES version of SMB. There’s only one 1UP mushroom and some of the levels are completely different and more difficult.

I prefer the simplicity of SMB. They’re both great, though only SMB cost me many quarters at a 7-11 one summer.
