Come on, gotta give props to Northern State! (1st album, anyway)
I’m a casual rap fan but I only know stuff by #2 and #3 on your list, and both runners up. I’d probably put SnP at #1 on my own list.
Guess I’ll have to look into Lauren Hill. Any recommendations?

salt ‘n’ pepa deserve a top-five ranking. my husband, a rap connoisseur, mentioned fergie. i’m adequately embarrassed. lauryn hill (you spelled her name wrong!), queen latifah, mc lyte, and missy elliott are all dead-on. what about lil’ kim?

That’s because she sings so much, too. I’d rather hear her sing than rap, that’s for sure. But I love her either way.
