Death Cab for Kiddies

by The Brit

If you were to hang around with my boys (8 and 4) for long enough, chances are you’d hear them sing the following refrain:

You gotta spend some time, love, you gotta spend some time with me.
And I know that you’ll find love, I will possess your heart.

It’s the chorus from Death Cab’s I Will Possess Your Heart. It’s not the only one they like — both of them also know all the words to Crooked Teeth, although they’re not sure what “strung out on homemade speed” means (thankfully).

I inflict my music on the kids in the car. Here are some others that meet their approval:

Pearl Jam, Alive
Rage Against the Machine, Imperial March
Queen, We will rock you
Anything from School of Rock

What music do your young uns like?

  1. I’m a nanny, and have made a couple mixes for the kiddies. One of their faves is Beastie Boys, Body Movin. Bjork, Oh So Quiet gets Natalie doing her “ballerina dance” and the opening piano of Sara Bareilles, Love Song makes Andrew giggle. Oh, and I cannot tell you how many times we’ve put Bushwalla’s, Creatures in the Yard, on repeat.

  2. When my oldest was a toddler, his favorite band was the Who (my husband’s favorite band). Later, he got into Linkin Park and 311 on his own. A little bit after that I played one song by the Melvins on repeat for an hour and he was hooked on *real* heavy music.

Now he likes a lot of stuff I do—Converge, Mastodon, Built to Spill, etc. We’re going to see the Melvins play in a month.

My daughter likes typical teenage girl stuff. I’ve gotten her into Sarah McLachlan, Death Cab, Iron & Wine, Patty Griffin, Gillian Welch, though.

My youngest son is 14 and a total thrash metal purist. Heavily influenced by his dad’s tastes.

My oldest son’s first concert (besides Jane’s Addiction when he was a year old) was Gorillaz. My daughter’s (besides the first Lollapalooza tour when she was a newborn) was Weird Al. My younget’s (besides the Young Fresh Fellows as a toddler) was also Weird Al.

  3. Oh yeah, and I meant to say—I really love this Death Cab song. But like most of their stuff, I wish someone else was singing it. Actually, first time I heard it, I was hoping it’d be an instrumental. (The first half reminds me of this band.)

    Your kids have good taste.

  4. My oldest daughter became a Beatlemaniac at age 12 or 13 (thirty years late) after watching Help! at a YW sleepover. She subsequently made a mix tape for my youngest son, who was 3 or 4 at the time, including the song “Misery” from my Please, Please Me CD. Soon thereafter, we heard emanating from his bedroom, in his own voice, the lament that “the world is treating me baaaaad, misery.”

He’s been something of a malcontent ever since.

  5. Susan,
I might have known you started your kids young.

    Brooke,
I like the idea of the Beastie Boys. Rap is next on the indoctrination programme. I think my boys’d like 3rd Bass - zany white rappers from the early 90’s.

  6. We make the boy listen to what we listen to (I’ve never been one for “kids music”). He loves the white stripes and Jack Johnson. He’s also digging the new Paul Weller with me. However, his absolute favorite is They Might Be Giants (esp. their kid’s 123 CD).

  7. For some reason, my boys both love The Melvins- it might be because it means dad is working out in the garage and they get to be out there- but it baffles me.

  8. Here is my kids’ favorite song. Kill me now.

  9. My kids always loved “Intergalactic” by the B Boys.

Perfect kid music: The Toy Dolls.

Also, kids seem to love “Ace of Spades” by Motorhead.

  10. Tracy, what’s not to love? Honestly, I think the Melvins are the most heavy, most unique band around.

  11. My kids are total squares. They don’t like “mean guitars.” I think their favorite CD would be a Sponge Bob CD we’ve borrowed from the library a million times. “Hey look everbody! I’m flying—without pants!”

  12. Mine loves Hey There Delilah by Plain White Tees, Pork and Beans by Weezer, We Will Rock You and a few others. We did listen to that Death Cab for Cuties song yesterday and she was singing along with that too! She loves music!

  13. She loves Benny and the Jets. In fact, Elton John’s appearance on the Muppet Show may be the most perfect Muppet Show ever.

She seems to like anything from jazz to rock to folk/bluegrass/oldtimey to classical to Father Goose’s Caribbean and Dan Zane’s Americana. But mostly, she listens to whatever I or my wife is in the mood for. (We fortunately have avoided the Barney/Wiggles/otherwise synthesized kid-pop that wants my daughter to like it.)

  15. My 14 yr old son likes all kinds of music, especially of the alt-rock variety. Lately, he seems to like Anberlin and Kings of Leon. My kids go to most concerts with me, so they went to Death Cab when they were here and really liked them. My daughter is 11 so she is stil into Hannah Montana and Ally & AJ, who I find tolerable. She also likes Colbie Calait, who I think is quite talented.

  17. My 7 yr-old son loves “So Whacha Want” by the Beasties. My 4 yr-old daughter’s favorite is “We Built This City on Rock and Roll” by Starship, although that may have recently been replaced by anything by They Might Be Giants. She’s really into their Friday Night Family Podcast.

  18. We just came back from a summer road trip. The kids are 7,5 and 3 the most requested songs were:
    Beat on the Brat -Ramones
    Goodday Sunshine - Beatles
    Popcorn Popping
Bet On It - High School Musical (heavy sigh)
Any Tegan and Sara (thanks Susan for the post a few weeks back. We are all now addicted!)
Any They Might be Giants although No, and John Lee Supertaster seem to be the favorite.
And of course the Indiana Jones theme song. Can’t start a trip or get in the car on a trip without it - just not possible.

  19. My three year old was strangely hooked on “Surrender” by Cheap Trick last year. I had one toddler who loved “Free Ride” and another who sang Marley’s “Get Up, Stand Up” everywhere for a few months (of course it came out as “get up, stammup”…)

They were all in love with Shiny Shiny for a while and we couldn’t go anywhere in the car without blaring it.

BTW — I love I Will Possess Your Heart. The groove is infectious.

  20. My kids dislike much of my music, but they enjoy the Beach Boys, Ramones and some Beastie Boys. And they can’t get enough of the They Might Be Giants children’s cds Here Come the ABC’s, Here come the 123’s and No!.

  21. You know, I just remembered that I bought Peter and The Wolf, narrated by Captain Kangaroo a while back for long rides in the car. Natalie HATED it…I was crushed. But hey, at least she sings along with Tristan Prettyman’s “Madly”.

  22. Kids love AC/DC. Their favorite song is Highway to Hell. I try and limit any song with the f bomb. yeah, I know, I’m a prude.

  23. My kids have “School of Rock” memorized. We’ve worn several DVD’s out. Recently I made a mix that has been in the car played non-stop. It’s rather entertaining to look in the rearview mirror and see 4 heads bobbing and singing to the words. It’s time to make a new CD to listen to. But, my kids current favorites are: Maroon 5, One Republic, Silverchair, Spill Canvas, Boys Like Girls. ( I know all the trendy stuff on the radio.)

A couple of months ago, their favorites were all the songs on Guitar Hero III - Slow Ride, Hit Me With Your Best Shot, Paint it Black, Rock and Roll All Nite, etc.

It’s amazing how quickly they can memorize ALL the words. The power of young brains!

  25. Long time lurker here–just had to comment on #19. My 7 year old daughter sings “Get Up Stand Up” all the time except she gets mixed up and it usually comes out more like “Get Up, Stand Up…Stand Up, Choose the Right”. I don’t correct her…

I love that haysi fantayzee song and looked for it on Youtube not too long ago, but couldn’t find it. Thanks for the link! (in keeping with the theme of the thread, my kids really hate that song!)
