  1. You’ll have to tell me what your one song is MCQ - your video won’t stream outside the US!

  2. Won’t stream for me, either…inside US.

  3. It’s a clip from Walk the Line where a producer tells Johnny Cash to sing the one song that means everything to him, the one song that he’d want people to remember him for if he were to die.

  4. I have three:

    Fisherman’s Blues - The Waterboys
    Northern Sky - Nick Drake
    Sweet Thing - Van Morrison

But “Northern Sky” is the one I want played at my funeral.

  6. Ceremony, Joy Division/New Order

  7. Johnny Hartman and John Coltrane, “My One and Only Love.” Johnny Hartman’s vocal is perfection embodied, and then Coltrane holds back from his usual fireworks for a subdued, hauntingly beautiful solo. So good, in fact, that I’m going to listen to it right now.

  8. Sorry the video isn’t working for some of you. I’ll try to fix it. It seems fine to me, but maybe hulu doesn’t work for everyone.

Susan, I knew you would never be able to just pick one.

    William, good choice.

    Greg, you’re not playing right!

Sam, can you link to it? We want to hear it too.

  29. Abby: I know, I know, but part of the fun here is how hard it is to pick just one song! Or, you could cheat, like Susan.

Susan, Robin is the brilliant, totally hot and talented Mrs. MCQ (Sorry I thought you knew that already).

Greg, you’re not getting the spirit of this at all.

Thomas P, as usual you are a mad genius.

jj: Love it. The inclusion of that song in Garden State made the whole movie for me.

Rebecca, that’s a totally awesome version of that song.

arJ, thanks, you are beginning to redeem yourself from the little bunny debacle.

    Comment by MCQ — May 15, 2008 @ 1:30 pm

  30. Okay, I’ve thought about it and it’s “I’m Free”, by the Rolling Stones.

Rather than bunnies I choose kittens.

    Comment by a random John — May 15, 2008 @ 2:07 pm

  35. gabby, I forgot that you were the Paul Weller fan. It’s a good song, but kind of a downer for your One Song that sums up your life.

arJ, see now you just went right back to the loony bin.

    Comment by MCQ — May 15, 2008 @ 2:52 pm

  36. Cassandra Gemini, The Mars Volta…

…because I want people to remember me for 31 minutes 42 seconds.

    Comment by The Brit — May 15, 2008 @ 3:08 pm

  37. “Bring It On Home” by Led Zeppelin actually fills the bill.

It’s a primal, bluesy piece with all the guitar, drums, bass and harmonica you could ask for …

    Comment by danithew — May 15, 2008 @ 4:32 pm

  38. Yeah, but I’ve never claimed to be all sunshine and roses!

    Comment by gabby — May 15, 2008 @ 6:10 pm

  39. The acoustic version of “Back to the Old House” would work for me as well.

    Comment by danithew — May 15, 2008 @ 7:23 pm

  40. Ah,yeah. Great stuff dan.

  41. Impossible task. But my soul identifies most strongly with the following three songwriters…

    Matt Johnson (aka The The)

Stephen Duffy (aka The Lilac Time)

    Conor Oberst (aka Bright Eyes)

… so some kind of mashup from them.

    Comment by Matt Thurston — May 19, 2008 @ 4:02 pm

  42. Hi. I’m new here, but this is just as good an introduction as any.

Swandive by Ani DiFranco. It’s just dissonant enough to fit me.

    Comment by angryyoungwoman — May 21, 2008 @ 6:24 am

  43. Ani’s pretty amazing.
