BSG recap 5/16 – “Guess What’s Coming to Dinner?”

by Ivan

No Sidney Poitier. :-(

Spoilers below the fold.

*If you like the original series and the new series (as I do), you must read this blog!

Start with this post here and then this one. Excerpt (if you must know why):

It’s no secret that I’m the biggest fan of the original Battlestar currently working on the new incarnation; you could almost say I’m the “ambassador” of the 1979 version, always looking for opportunities to include classic Galactica material on the current series. It was maybe two years ago that I was talking to [writer/producer] David Weddle . . .

* There may be more BSG TV movies after the series is over.

* It’s not official, but I like (even if I don’t agree with) this blog’s discussion of the identity of the final Cylon.

* Mark Verheiden sez this about the Hybrid’s babblings from last week:

I don’t want to get into a line-by-line analysis of the hybrid’s monologue(s), though it’s always fun to write! At any rate, it’s safe to say that some of the babble represents the creature’s very mysterious mental gymnastics. And, if you listen closely, certain writerly obsessions with The Wild Bunch and The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance. Some of it is specific to the ship (repairs, altering temperatures, etc.) and some of it is very pertinent to the larger mysteries. Maybe this will help: Every line is scripted, none of it is ad-libbed, so everything our hybrid says, she was meant to say.

The episode:

- The final five have been to Earth and can help us find it! News to Tigh, I’m sure.

- The amputation of Gaeta’s leg, for some odd reason, convinces me he’s the final Cylon. He also has a pretty good singing voice. I don’t recognize the song (did anyone catch all the lyrics?) so I’m assuming it’s an original song. He should be singing Dylan.

- I know he’s covering his own butt, but Tigh is making the best arguments and asking the right questions. If the Raiders won’t fire on the fleet because of the final five, why did they fire on the fleet during the last three seasons?

- My wife claims there was a brief shot of a Star Wars ship of some sort on the hanger bay, but I don’t have TiVo and can’t rewind and pause to double check.

- “My friendship and trust mean frak.” Man, I miss “felgercarb.” Frak is way overused as the all purpose cussword on this show. Use some of the others, dangnabbit!

- Starbuck and Roslin did something the characters on Lost never do: they talked and shared information.

- My wife’s review: “At least they’re moving the story forward. Why did it have to be so slow at the beginning of the season with all the action compressed into two episodes?”

- My review: Ditto to my wife. Pretty cool cliffhanger, actually. It’s been awhile since we’ve had one of those.

- And we have to wait two weeks. The preview looked cool. And it had a brief shot of Romo Lampkin – so he’s back. I’m guessing the off-hand reference to “my lawyer” by Baltar was meant to prepare us for that.

  1. Isn’t that song the one that the music composer was bragging about? Supposedly there was some amazing thing he scored coming up in the future.

I have to say this was by far the best episode o the season though. It makes up for the previous ones for the most part. (If it keeps up)

  2. BTW – I think Zarek is the final Cylon.

  3. I am leaning toward Gaeta as the final cylon. I think his role in the resistance on New Caprica makes him a good candidate.

I agree — this was another really good episode.

  4. I can understand why some are saying Gaeta given his place in Galactica and especially with Baltar’s Cylon detector. (Speaking of which – why didn’t it detect more Cylons? I thought it actually did work.)

  5. I agree there is need for more curse words from the original series, frak is sometimes used in a way that wouldn’t make sense if it were our f-word. The informations sharing thing is exactly what makes me angry about Lost. You have all these people that could figure so much out if they just sat down and started talking. It was refreshing to see a show actually do it.
