BSG recap 5/09 - “Faith”

You gotta have it, after all.
Spoilers below the fold.

How to Spot a Cylon

- According to the writer of last week’s episode, the first two minutes of this week’s episode were originally the last two minutes of the last episode.

- Not all the podcasts are up yet, so no insights from last week’s episode yet. However, there’s a “enhanced” version of “He that Believeth in Me” on Scifi.com. It’s basically the entire episode with Ron Moore’s podcast.

- Bear McCreary, the composer for the series, says “On a side note, a few days ago I finished composing what is probably the greatest piece of music I’ve ever written for this series. I can’t talk about it now, but you’ll hear it soon.”

- Here’s a nice interview with Mark Verheiden (co-executive producer) about BSG that’s rather spoiler free.

As for tonight’s episode:

*The president without a wig – that looks quite fake to me. Not the best bald cap job on TV. At least they put a scarf over her head the rest of the episode.

*The cylon in hiding shot Gaeta. Well, he’s Starbuck’s husband, so it figures he’d be loyal to her, but I wonder if it’s more than that.

*Apparently, Athena isn’t still fully integrated into the crew. Not everyone accepts her, though that’s not quite a surprise.

*(I have to add – this whole thing about Starbuck hearing a song the other humans can’t hear – well, it’s quite an odd juxtaposition with the preceding episode of Doctor Who, which was all about an alien song that most humans couldn’t hear).

*“You were the first to say ‘No’ to the entire plan.” Are the show’s creators still holding to the idea the Cylons have a plan?

*Why was Baltar quoting Shakespeare? Don’t tell me the colonies have the Complete Works of Shakespeare somewhere.

*Someone (not me) should go back and transcribe everything Baltar is saying in the background (I think I heard a gospel hymn in addition to the Shakespeare) and all the stuff the hybrid said as well. I’m sure there’s something important in their (“the children of the one reborn”? And I’m sure the dying leader and the Opera house is a reference to Roslin.) My wife insists Baltar is merely spouting empty boilerplate, though.

*That other cancer patient (Major Kira!) actually referred to “Zeus.” Odd considering that last season all the references were to Jupiter instead. Yeah, they’re the same person but the series has mostly stuck to Greek names, and so it was odd that they used the Roman name last season and yet revert to the Greek name this season. There’s been no serious indication that both sets of names were in play in colonial society.

*My wife’s review: “Yea! More happened that episode. And no sex orgies with Baltar! Also, less Starbuck is always good. I liked it.”

*My review: For the first time this season, I feel like we’re getting somewhere. I enjoyed the episode, overall. It seems like the creators have stopped moving the various pieces around and have started some sort of forward momentum. Hopefully it’s not a fakeout.

  1. It was indeed a good episode. Let’s hope that is the norm going forward.

  2. It was the best episode of the season thus far. But that’s not saying a whole lot. Let’s hope the season started off slow and picks up speed. Last season started off fantastic and then went way askew.

Good pick up about the Greek/Roman bit. I wonder if that was accidental. Also the whole “they are metaphor” bit was odd. If they are metaphors then generally there is a God behind them all. (That was the typical Greek/Roman approach - Zeus became the ‘all’ or One of Platonism or Stoicism) Yeah, philosophy geek in me coming out. But it just struck me as a very weird exchange. So the colonials are all atheists or literalists?

Am I the only one who wonders what is going on back at the original 12 home worlds with the Cylons there?

  3. This was much better than last week. The song only Starbuck can ear is similar to the end o last season. Are they trying to hint she’s cylon, or just throw us off course?

  4. I just want to point out something — the Final Five Cylons are FROM EARTH.

  5. Yeah, I noticed that too.

  6. I don’t buy the idea that the final 5 are from earth. I think the writers are just using the Hybrid’s riddles to throw us and the characters in the show off.
