BSG Recap 5/30 - Sine Qua Non

by Ivan

Ladyhawk Los Angeles 05-29-08

by Susan M

There’s some music that makes me want to gather it up in my arms and squeeze it so tight that it sinks into my body. I want to absorb into my bones, so I can carry the feeling it gives me around with me forever. Ladyhawk’s music is like that.

LOST: There’s No Place Like Home (Parts 2 and 3)

Photography Tips Part II: Aperture and Depth of Field

by Susan M

This is the second in a series of posts I’m doing about photography. I’m approaching this as if I’m speaking to novices with no knowledge beyond pointing and shooting an automatic camera. This post will be focused on (har har) aperture and depth of field. If you don’t know what that means, don’t let it scare you. It’s actually very simple.

Apple TV: So I Finally Did It

by Clark

Well. I finally did it. After my kids manage to lose yet an other DVD and I looked at what replacing a Disney DVD cost I realized it was time to get the AppleTV. The way I figure it I need only justify the cost of 12 DVDs and I’ve paid for the AppleTV. Plus I get the convenience of having all the movies handy without having DVDs in a place where prying little hands can scratch them or worse put them in the trash.

Indy IV - an actual review

by The Brit

The first scene of Indy IV is so shockingly awful that you wonder whether it was intended to be so. I suspect they filmed it right at the end knowing that the pile of crap they had in front of them might as well stink from the first frame onwards. That way you at least know what you’re going to expect. Hopes immediately crushed, you can then concentrate on snogging your date or enjoying silent popcorn burps. I suppose we should be grateful.

I’m not going to describe the particular abomination in question because some things should be experienced in their full, unanticipated splendour. Let’s just say that Lucas and Spielberg have opened their bladder over the Indiana Jones of yore and should both be arrested for a display of public immorality that even Binks rose above. Yes, you heard it right: Phantom Menace was better. Indy IV is a leaden, dull, dimwitted, tiring piece of cinematic Scheiss. If you are on the fence about seeing it, please don’t go. Do not reward their sorry arses.

The Final Cylon is….

Anastasia Dualla, according to betting site BetCRIS. She gets the best odds out of anyone. Runners up include Felix Gaeta and Tom Zarek (the choice of yours truly). Read more here.

Movie Review: Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull

by Supergenius

Just kidding. I haven’t seen it. What, you think stupid bloggers get passes to see sweet bigtime movies like this? No, I got a pass to see Don’t Mess With the Zohan instead.

Anyhow, if you’ve seen Indy IV, post about it in the comments. My prediction: people will call it “pretty good.”

For fans of: RJD2, DJ Shadow, Moby

by Susan M

My son is really into a handful of artists like RJD2, DJ Shadow, and his latest discovery (and therefore mine) is Quantic.

Quantic’s roots are in jazz, though, and allmusic.com lists them as something called broken beat. I’m afraid I know very little about electronica. But I know Quantic are really good.

Concert tickets: a rant

by The Brit

News of the Death Cab album got me to looking at tickets for their Birmingham, UK gig in July.

Tickets are £15. Except they’re not. They’re £17.60 (with booking fee). Except they’re not. They’re £22.40 (with transaction fee). Now, if I can dig deep for £15, I can dig deep for an extra seven quid ($14), but something about the whole system bugs the hell out of me. So much so that I can’t bring myself to cup the balls of these ticket pimps. Alas for Pearl Jam’s failed crusade.

New Mountain Goats & Ladyhawk albums

by Susan M

Two great releases this year.

They both happen to be bands that I’ll get stuck on one song by and have trouble listening to their entire albums. Right now, it’s “Lovecraft in Brooklyn” from the Moutain Goats Heretic Pride, and “I Don’t Always Know What You’re Saying” from Ladyhawk’s Shots.

Upfront Week: More News

by Rebecca

There’s a glimmer of hope for Moonlight fans like me. According to eonline:

according to Nikki Finke, there’s a chance the CW (which is co-owned by the WB and which produces Moonlight) could schedule it on Saturday night.

I have no idea who Nikki Finke is, but I’d be very happy if it was picked up by another network.

The good news: Fox has ordered 13 episodes of the new Joss Whedon drama Dollhouse. The bad news: It’s slated as a mid-season pick up, meaning we won’t get to see it until (probably) January.

Idol: Rank ‘Em 1-to-3

by Rusty

1) David Cook
2) David Archuleta
3) Syesha Mercado

Last night wasn’t very obvious to me. It appears the judges have already decided Syesha is third place. During her second song I realized what bugs me about her—she’s smiling all the time, even when the song doesn’t call for it. That second song was supposed to be sexy and it wasn’t because she was so busy smiling. She’s a good singer and obviously has fun on the stage, but I don’t think she’s in the same league as some of the past singers who haven’t won. Archuleta’s first song was great, second song was terribly cheesy and the third song was him phoning it in. Boring, boring, boring. David Cook was pretty good for all three and wins by default. My prediction is that it will be Syesha gone tonight, Archuleta winning it and Cook sighing in relief.
