My most popular youtube clips.

by Susan M

You know, I go to a lot of shows, and I take videoclips at almost all of them. And I upload those clips to youtube. I have quite a collection going—over 150 live band clips. My camera somehow does really well with the ultra loud sound at shows. It doesn’t come out all distorted like a lot of live footage you see on youtube.

What’s funny is what my most viewed clips are.

My top five include two clips of heavy metal band 3 Inches of Blood, a classic-rock sounding band called Bad Wizard, indie pop band Voxtrot, and….Lichens.

Lichens are an experimental band—well, just one guy. Whose goal is to represent the sound of moss growing. Here’s the clip:

What’s funny is it has a rating of two stars. I wonder if someone embedded it in a “look-at-this-trainwreck” kind of post somewhere? Or maybe opening for Explosions in the Sky generates all kinds of youtube searches.

Here are some of my favorite live clips that I think deserve more traffic (some are full songs, some just partials):

Ted Leo – “Little Dawn”

The Hellacopters – “By the Grace of God”

The Frames – “Fitzcarraldo”

Bang Camaro (a band with 12 lead singers, yes all these guys on the stage are in the band):

Low – “Sunflower”

New Model Army – “Ballad of Bodmin Pill”

You can see all the clips I’ve uploaded here, in order of most viewed.

  1. Very cool.

As far as I can tell the trick to getting a lot of views is getting linked to from external sites. I’ve got a few videos that I think are pretty interesting, but the one that got linked to by big blogs has lots of hits, the others not so much.

If you posted these to fansites or blogs about the bands you’d probably get a ton of hits on them.
