BSG: The Final Season

by Clark

BSGSo what did you all think?

Here are my thoughts.

1. I hate watching BSG in regular resolution now that I have a HD TV. Why doesn’t Dish have SciFiHD?

2. I’m calling that the Satan figure from the original series shows up real soon now and ends up being behind the ‘hallucinations.’

3. The first half rocked. Especially the battles.

4. It drug more the second half. No where near as good as last season’s opener. Of course last season’s quality dropped tremendously after the first few episodes. Here’s hoping this one doesn’t.

5. There’s no way Starbuck’s a Cylon. (Yes I know the actress stated on the net whether she was — I didn’t read it)

6. Apollo’s weird motivations are still bugging me. And I’m praying the triangle doesn’t return.

7. The previews looked great and suggest that the Cylons have their own problems.

  1. No comments yet? Yesh. I thought we’d have a backlog.

I did kind of dig the whole “Baltar is a Saint” angle although his getting seduced within a few minutes was pretty weird. (Although was that a plan to get him to stay with them? I’m sure his predilections were well known from New Caprica.

  2. Lee’s motivations are very odd.

Let’s see – we’re still being chased by genocidal cylons, and thus we need every fighter pilot we can get. But that doesn’t fulfill his inner needs, so forget it. Lee is coming across a incredibly selfish – the problem is I get the idea the creators see his as doing the right thing.

We’ll see how it pans out, I guess.

  3. I think he’d still be willing to be a pilot. (He’d resigned but flew in that last battle I’d note) He just doesn’t want to be a military leader anymore.

  4. I thought the episode was wicked awesome. Baltar was wonderful.

  5. Did I mention that Baltar was wonderful?

I agree re: Lee’s motivations, but I think those will come to more fruition in subsequent episodes. I didn’t feel that the episode drug, not at all. I relished every second.

  6. I dug it. The Baltar stuff was expecially compelling I thought.

The Starbuck explanation is gonna be really tough if she is not a Cylon.

What returning “triangle” are you talking about Clark?

Who was the Satan figure again? Do you mean that cool defense attorney Baltar had?

I am not too bugged about Lee’s motivations — seemed to me like he was mostly saying he didn’t want a military career.

I agree that the idea of the Cylons having internal strife does sound really interesting.

I wonder how this new Baltar as emerging prophet thing will play out throughout the season. I hope the writers do something good with it.

  7. For all you Dish Network folks they are apparently adding Sci Fi in HD either this month or early May.

  8. Bad triangles: Apollo, Starbuck and whichever spouse you choose.

Starbuck ended up on the Kobol planet-ship. Remember in the original series they had that Satan vs. the Archeangel bit? I think this is sort of a revised version of how Starbuck ended up there in the original series. In the original series it was called “War of the Gods” and the Satan figure was Count Iblis.

  9. It is interesting how Starbuck’s disappearance and return mirrors the disappearance and return of Apollo, Starbuck, Sheba and assorted Viper pilots in “War of the Gods” in the original series.

For one thing, besides the viper returning in better shape than it did when it was captured, in the original series Apollo, Sheba and Starbuck had no memory of their time on the Ships of Light, but they did have coordinates implanted in their memories that pointed the way to Earth.

  10. Best moment was when the raider pinged Anders and Anders unknowingly responded with appropriate the IFF when his eye flashed. My guess is that single moment predicates everything else that will happen through the remainder of the season.

Thing I don’t get is Chief. It was his insight in that temple on Kobol that helped them interpret the eye and help them get on the right course to earth. He kept mentioning about his parents religious influence when he was growing up. Is that just a memory implant? Were these final five switched at birth? Did they grow up with normal lives? Do they age?

All very interesting. Can’t wait to find out the answers.

  11. They must age because Adama has known Saul for 40 years or something…

  12. I guess Gaius Baltar really knows how to get laid.

I think he’s had more sex in the last four seasons than I have.

I want to feel “God’s presence” too.

  13. If they age why does the resurrection age them?

    Comment by Clark — April 7, 2008 @ 1:07 pm

  14. Clark, maybe the final five can’t resurrect. Moore has made it clear that these five are significantly different.

  15. I was more thinking of the Cylon played by that guy from Quantum Leap and Blue Velvet. He’s old and played a religious leader who, presumably, had been around a while.

Likewise Sharon had been around a while. At least that’s the impression we get. Maybe I’m wrong there.

  16. By the way, Ron Moore’s website is pretty funny if you’re into the intrigues behind the scenes.

  17. I still haven’t seen this. I was really excited about the upcoming season up until a couple of weeks ago, when I finally got to see season 3. Ew buoy. Season 2 –> Season 3 constitutes one of the sharpest dips in quality that I can recall. Some good moments, but good God were there multitudes of horrors. The love triangle? The boxing episode? The courtroom drama crap? That whole final episode was so ridiculous that it almost felt like an SNL skit lampooning a BSG episode.

Who am I kidding, I’ll watch anyway if I can. Does anyone know if you can watch the episodes online? I no longer have cable so that’ll be my only option, at least until a DVD release.

  18. Yeah, all the new episodes are put online by Sci Fi Friday at noon. (Sorry, no link handy)

There were some good episodes last season though. The whole temple bit was good. And as much trepidation I had about the whole reset on new Caprica was proved wrong. The first four episodes were pretty solid.

The rest though? Yeah. Pretty bad. Although I actually didn’t mind the court room stuff.

    Comment by Clark — April 11, 2008 @ 11:20 pm

  19. The love triangle was the suckiest part of last season. I never believed there was any chemistry between Starbuck and Apollo. The tried to show some again tonight and it seems totally forced to me.

I did like the new devil character chatting with Baltar though. And the pending Cylon civil war is good stuff.

  20. What the hell with 2nd Baltar?!?!

I guess we need to start providing episode recaps and posts. Get on that, Clark, will you?

    Comment by Supergenius — April 12, 2008 @ 8:32 am

  21. I assumed that Six was the angel on Baltar’s shoulder and 2nd Baltar was the devil…

    Comment by Geoff J — April 12, 2008 @ 12:08 pm

  22. Unless this is Caprica Six’s Baltar making a crossover visit. I bet Caprica Six starts hallucinating Baltar’s Six.

    Comment by Ivan Wolfe — April 12, 2008 @ 12:28 pm

  23. or, perhaps it has something to do with the Cylon’s proximity — he seems to be able to have this visits when they are close by.

And, he seems to have a powerful effect on female cylons.
