Lost — Season 4 Premiere, Recap

by Scudworth

This won’t be as in depth as BTD Greg’s impressive recaps, and I’ll refrain from much commentary.  With luck, Greg will resume his rightful place as KB’s proper Lost-recapper.  What follows is a brief scene-to-scene synopsis of tonight’s hour-long premiere (that’s the first bit of news — the advertised “2-hour event” that led us to expect a 2-hour premiere was really a 1-hour recap of seasons 1-3 + a 1-hour premiere).  On to business… (more…)

2007 Movies that were Better than Michael Clayton

by RoastedTomatoes

So, the nominations for this year’s Academy Awards were announced early this morning. The Best Picture Nominees are: Atonement, Juno, No Country for Old Men, There Will Be Blood, and Michael Clayton. In one sense, this is a very good list. The Academy usually finds a way to nominate at least one horrible film, and that seems not to have happened this year. And yet… Michael Clayton? (more…)

The Bravery, Live

Here’s a band you may want to check out Clark:

Every once in a while, you catch a band that seems ready to take the next big step and launch into the stratosphere. The Bravery seems like that kind of band right now. (more…)

OK I’ve missed two maybe three years of music

by Clark

OK, I’ve been busy. Two kids will lots of illness, tons of house repairs and starting a new business (while running the old) I’ve not had a lot of time for music. However one of my new year’s resolutions (beyond biking to work as soon as the snow eases) is to catch up on music. (And listen to it while biking to work) So here’s my question. What have I missed and what should I listen to? One I want to nab as soon as I can is the new Radiohead album. What else?

Way over yonder in the minor key

by Susan M

I want to make a mix of songs in a minor key for a road trip to Vegas next week. Any suggestions?

I’ll post a couple to the radio.blog that I *think* are in a minor key. Correct me if I’m wrong:

“Way Over Yonder in the Minor Key” – Billy Bragg and Wilco featuring Natalie Merchant
“Gold Dust Woman” – Fleetwood Mac

The Damnwells – New Songs

by MCQ

Alex Dezen of The Damnwells has written some new songs and, as always, they’re completely fantastic. I hope they make it onto a new Damnwells album. Here’s one symptom of what’s wrong with the music business: The Damnwells are not as successful as bands with half the talent they have. If you love these guys as much as I do, pass the word, and buy their albums: Bastards of the Beat and Air Stereo.

Is Cloverfield simply The Host set in New York?

by The Brit

I’m intrigued. Someone go and see it. As for The Host, the opening 20 minutes — when the creature is revealed — is wonderful. The rest of the film is a weird combination of horror and slapstick. And speaking of Korean cinema, if you haven’t seen Oldboy, repent immediately.

American Gladiator: Guilty Pleasure

by a random John

I liked American Gladiator as a kid, but I did not anticipate liking it as an adult.  Well…

It’s actually cheesier than before.  The outfits are worse, the use of steroids seems to have increased, they’ve got water to fall into and fire to battle.  They’ve even got Hulk Hogan doing hyperventilated interviews.  So I should hate it.

But once the Eliminator starts I can’t tear my eyes away.  Does anybody else wonder about the stamina of the contestants when they can’t get up the treadmill?  It seems like if they’re all so fit they should have some wind left at the end…

Quarterlife

Have you seen Quarterlife?  It’s an internet series that my wife discovered and that we have all now become obsessed with.  It has apparently now been picked up by NBC (to much whining by the purist fans).  I think it’s as good or better than anything on TV.  What do you think?  Is this the future of television?

Did I Choose Poorly…?

by Clark

OK, like at least one other person here I got an HD-DVD player over the holidays. It was extremely cheap at the Thanksgiving sale at Costco ($170) so I said, “Dang. How can I miss that?” Especially since I now had an HD-TV and the Dish shows only play at 720p not 1080i. I’ve only watched a few HD-DVDs. (Oceans 13, Bourne Ultimatum) However I noticed that at Walmart, while the BluRay section was slightly larger it had fewer movies I wanted. Further the HD-DVDs were always sold out while the BluRays never were. Plus, since Microsoft was pushing HD-DVD I figured momentum was on that side. Dang. I should have paid attention to Microsoft’s failure with Vista.

Let’s talk mp3 players

by Susan M

Do you have more music than will fit on your mp3 player? My boss just gave me an iPod Touch for Christmas. I haven’t had an mp3 player in years, not since—interestingly enough—a different boss gave me one for Christmas, back when they were brand new gadgets (before iPods even existed), and would only hold about 10 songs. My new one is 16 GB, which holds about 10% of the music I have stored as mp3s.

I have to say, it’s pretty cool—mainly because I got a thing that lets me play it through my car stereo, so now I can bring all kinds of music in the car without having to burn it to CD (I don’t like to bring store bought cds in the car because I’m rough with them—every spare inch of storage space in my car is jammed with CDs). It’s static-y sometimes, but all in all not bad. (Plus, my iPod—or iPoke, as my daughter calls it—does Internet and has a calendar on it.)
