The Perfect Egg Nog Combination (Nog-To-Milk)

65/35

Because this is fact and not up for debate I’m considering turning the comments off. Though I guess I’ll leave them on for those who want to chime in and agree with me.

  2. i will try this ratio. though, i can’t see how it will make it taste any better. egg nog is disgusting. though, every holiday season i find myself trying it again, in an attempt to be festive. thinking that maybe it won’t be that bad. but it is.

    nog is perfect as is.

    Comment by Jeremy — December 4, 2007 @ 11:19 pm

  4. Eh.

It depends on your purpose for drinking. If you just need some liquid holiday refreshment, a higher milk ratio is necessary. If it’s more of a drinkable dessert you’re after, 100% nog’s the way to go. Most of the time I go half and half.

Really, if you want heated discussion, we could post on the wassail controversy: orange, apple, cranberry? Just juice, or chunky fruit floaties? Whole cloves & cinnamon sticks, or powdered? Crockpot, stovetop or microwave?

  5. Eggnog to rum:
    50/50
It will quickly make you drunk enough to not taste the nog anymore.

  6. 100/0 It is, indeed, perfect.

And if we’re talking wassail, whole spices, orange and a crock pot keeps the temp perfect for consumption. (powdered cinnamon does weird things when added to liquid…)

  7. All I can say is, ’tis the season for Ronnybrook eggnog ice cream (at least, here in New York). ‘Nuff said.

  8. I can’t remember ever having eggnog. Can’t imagine I ever will.

  9. 65/35 because 2/1 is too thick?

  10. I’m going to have to agree with the 0/100

    Comment by gabby — December 5, 2007 @ 9:41 am

  11. I love eggnog and I’ve always been tempted to try making my own. Unfortunately, it’s actually kind of hard for a teetotaler like me to find a really good non-alcoholic eggnog recipe.

    Comment by BTD Greg — December 5, 2007 @ 9:43 am

  12. 0/100, if it’s the nasty dairy-case stuff. Eggnog all the way, if it’s homemade with milk/egg/sugar/flavoring, salmonella be da**ed.

    Comment by Ardis Parshall — December 5, 2007 @ 9:47 am

  13. Has anyone here ever actually got salmonella from grocery store eggs? I haven’t, and I’ve been eating cookie dough for over thirty years running.

I’m not saying it’s not a possibility (hypocritically, I prevent my kids from eating raw cookie dough), but it seems like the risks might just be overhyped.

  14. Hmmm… I’m more of a 40/60 nog drinker myself (assuming 1% milk). Non-fat requires 65/35; 2% milk calls for 35/65. 100% nog is best for drive-by swigs out of the carton… (don’t worry — I don’t do that with the publicly shared nog)

    Comment by Geoff J — December 5, 2007 @ 10:10 am

  15. Ditto to gabby and arJ. I try it every year, I am repulsed every year.

    Comment by cantinflas — December 5, 2007 @ 10:59 am

  16. We made homemade one year, and I don’t remember the ratio — I just know it had heavy milk and you folded in piles of whipped egg whites to make it super light. The right amount of nutmeg and mmmm. ‘Twas good.

  17. Ardis, I’m just glad you didn’t spell out that curse word. This shows that you didn’t think the actual word in your mind and that we didn’t think it when we read it. Thank you.

  19. Why on earth would you cut eggnog with milk?

If Rusty drank coffee, he’d be one of those silly latte drinkers.

    Comment by William Morris — December 5, 2007 @ 1:15 pm

  20. Perhaps that was a bit harsh, and maybe the Morrises are just a bunch of hedonists, but I have seriously never heard of such a practice.

I don’t understand why anyone would want to dilute flavor and texture.

    Comment by William Morris — December 5, 2007 @ 1:35 pm

  21. “I don’t understand why anyone would want to dilute flavor and texture.”

For drinkability. You need a thinner, more liquid drink if you’re thirsty from all the chocolate you’ve been consuming (but want something more decadent than water or milk because, heck, it’s the holidays).

Otherwise, yeah, full strength nog is great. It’s just that at 100%, it’s a stand-alone dessert.

    Comment by Allison — December 5, 2007 @ 3:27 pm

  22. Thou shalt not dilute the nog.

    Comment by danithew — December 5, 2007 @ 3:59 pm

  23. I agree with danithew. I used to dilute, but then I needed more hair on my chest.

    Comment by Ben — December 5, 2007 @ 6:10 pm

  24. Eggnog and sprite (or 7up) is what is usually mixed around here. Sometimes we do drink it straight.

    Comment by Jared — December 5, 2007 @ 10:23 pm

  25. Okay try this one on for size. Soy eggnog. Yes, mmmmmm. Esp with dark rum. More mmmmm…

    Comment by Marian — December 6, 2007 @ 12:04 am

  26. Jared has it right. Sprite, 7up or Fresca is the proper mixer for the nog.

  27. Interestingly Target is selling Soy Eggnog. All my kids are milk intolerant so we’ve been buying soy. Can’t stand the stuff myself, mind you.

    Comment by Clark — December 6, 2007 @ 1:10 pm

  28. my granddad made eggnog that was like 70% eggnog, 20% vanilla ice cream and 10% frozen orange juice. Sprinkled with nutmeg, it’s divine.

    Comment by amri — December 6, 2007 @ 4:17 pm

  29. Just tried it with rum for the first time a week ago – 50/50. It was quite tasty and puts you right to sleep!

    Comment by David J — December 6, 2007 @ 5:24 pm

  30. Oh 80/20. Marian, soy nog (at least the Silk brand) is not yum. Unless you go into it thinking “this will be different, slightly beany and full of masking agents” in which case it’s just fine.

I used to demo egg nog for Cream of Weber (this is what high school students have to do to survive the holidays), and loved the variety of nog-sponses that people gave. Of course there was the “Is there rum in that?” wink wink nudge nudge to the gagging reflex and accompanying motions.

    Comment by Christy — December 7, 2007 @ 12:22 pm

  31. There is actually no perfect ratio, since nog in all its manifestations is perfectly horrid! I blame Tracy M for getting my kids hooked on that evil “Christmas Milk”!!!!

Wasail-Apple or Orange,no floaties, whole spices, crockpot

    Comment by mo mommy — December 7, 2007 @ 4:06 pm

  32. No, not silk brand eggnog, Christy. But you bring a good point to mind. One buys milk and no matter what the brand, milk is milk. I have to drink soy. Milk makes me crazy. Dull, thick headed, worrier. Soy is different! Every brand has it’s own flavour, so I promise I will do a taste test for you soy drinkers, save you the time and money, and recommend brands… if a dull thick headed worrying mom has credibility…!

    Comment by Marian — December 7, 2007 @ 9:18 pm

  33. Marian, if there is a brand of soy milk out there that’s drinkable or even kind of good, please share the information! During the months when I couldn’t have any dairy, I tried several, but finally gave up and used rice milk (watery, but inoffensive) on my cereal.

    Comment by Allison — December 9, 2007 @ 6:05 pm

  34. Allison, I do the rice milk too- by my kids love the soymilk Costco sells… in vanilla flavor, and it’s organic to boot.

Yes, bwa-hahaha, I am the evil pusher of Christmas Milk!

    Comment by tracy m — December 9, 2007 @ 9:29 pm

  35. Allison, before I put all my attention to soy milk and nog, somethings to try are the “fairly” new (to me) soy cream cheese and sour cream. I think there is only one brand – Tofutti, but even my daughter who really dislikes soy products likes this stuff. But don’t buy it it you aren’t “non-dairy” – far too expensive and still synthetic food… By the way as far as soy ice cream goes… just kiddin – I’m sure there’s far too much already when this disussion started with egg nog! tbc…Marian
