Serenity 2?

by Rebecca

It’s being rumoured that a straight to DVD ‘Serenity 2′ film is in the works. I’m a huge Joss Whedon fan, but I’m a little dubious that it could be really good.

For a start the quotes in the article come from a character whose dead (unless they set it before ‘Serenity’). I know DVD sales of ‘Serenity’ have been fantastic, but does that mean another needs to be made?

‘Serenity 2′ - what do you think?

  1. Normally, I’d be wary of anything straight-to-DVD, but if all the major players who were involved with the original series and movie were participating in this, I think it could be pretty good.

The reason this would be straight-to-DVD is that the original movie, although a success with critics and fans, fizzled at the box office. No studio is going to want to spend the millions of dollars it takes to promote a movie if there’s little chance for them to recoup those costs. On the other hand, the costs of special effects seem to have been reduced dramatically in the past decade or so, meaning that even a moderate-budget movie can look pretty good.

  5. I remember reading that Serenity was the endcap of the story, so any other movies should be set earlier in the timeline.

  6. Am I the only one who found Serenity mediocre at best? I never quite figured out all the geek angst about it not doing better.

  7. Clark: You’re not the only one. Also, in my cultural lexicon, straight-to-DVD = lame.

  8. MCQ, if straight-to-DVD didn’t generally mean lame, we wouldn’t even be having this discussion. The question is whether Whedon and crew can create an exception to the rule.

  9. I would bet that a straight to DVD Serenity would be better than the first.

Clark, were you a Firefly watcher? If so, you’ll probably understand that Serenity wasn’t as good, but was necessary anyway.

  10. If they make something for straight to DVD that isn’t lame then the studio will release it in theaters.

No. Lots of doofs agree with you.

doof: noun. Someone who salivates over a straight-to-DVD sequel to a mediocre sci-fi movie.

  14. I suspect that there is a lot that can be done with straight to video.

Part of that is the format and expense. To format for HD television is a lot different than doing the same for a movie.

You could shoot a straight to DVD movie for about the cost of doing an episode of Firefly.

The production cost difference would be millions of dollars.

I’m having difficulty parsing the rest of the comment, but this line I understood and I have to disagree. The costs of getting people together for a one-off project are going to be much greater than the cost of a single episode (out of 10 to 24) of a TV series. TV shows have efficiencies that movies do not.

  16. Ok, normally I would agree that straight to DVD releases tend to be mediocre at best. On the other hand, Firefly was an excellent show that died before its time, and Serenity was also, in my opinion, quite good. These were good because of there was an excellent cast, and very good writing.

Since, the way it sounds, we would have the same cast and naturally Joss would be writing it, I think it has a lot of potential and could prove a welcome exception to the straight to DVD rule. Either way, if the movie does get made, you can bet I’ll be first in line to buy it.

  17. I sure as heck am jumping on board - YES to Serenity Two!!!

And, hmmm, maybe Wash could be resurrected by the Reavers if it follows Serenity one instead of being a sequel. Heh heh - Wash the Reaver!

  18. I vote Serenity 2 straight to dvd if only it’s a prequel or involves Wash & Book in flashbacks. Lots of flashbacks. I’m still pissed that Joss killed off my two favorite characters.

  19. No prequels, please. Flashbacks, maybe.

I like that, finally, we have a sci-fi flick where people we actually care about (and that were unique, fully-developed characters) are killed off.

  20. I wasn’t mad that Joss killed off Book, but I was kinda mad that he died like a chump. For such a cool character, with as much potential as he had, he didn’t get much screen time in Serenity. Wash’s death at least happened toward the end, and had a little emotional resonance.
