Fug-o-meter

by The Brit

Just for fun, I ran the current US box office top ten through the Fug-o-meter. Here are the scores:

1 Superbad — 81
2 Rush Hour 3 — 55
**3 The Bourne Ultimatum — 85**
4 The Simpsons Movie — 80
5 The Invasion — 53
6 Stardust — 74
7 Hairspray — 81
8 Underdog — 36
9 Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix — 74
10 I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry –50

Good bets have 80 or more Fugs. All in all a pretty evenly divided week: some good, some ok, some stinkers.

Underdog?!

The Fug Score averages the Metacritic score and the IMDB user rating. The Fug Score does not lie.

  1. Of this year’s movies, Ratatouille seems to be The One (91), which is one Fug below critic-darling Pan’s Labyrinth (92), which I will finally get ’round to seeing tomorrow night.

  2. Excellent work, although I think it ranks the Simpsons a little high.

  3. On the Simpsons, both Metacritic and IMDB have the same ranking: 80/8.0. This puts it right on the cusp. Perhaps the decider is, do you like The Simpsons?

Obviously, if you only see a movie once a month or so, it’s going to be Bourne all the way.

  4. Brit, that’s possible — but I love The Simpsons (TV), and yet found the movie underwhelming (see reviews at KB).

  5. Hollywood needs some serious help.

  6. Re: The Simpsons, Supergenius speaks the truth.

I also found Bourne Ultimatum a bit high. It’s definitely good for its genre, but does the genre deserve that high a placement?

    Susan, it’s August.

  7. Any time of year.

  8. I really liked Pan’s Labyrinth but I do think it was vastly overhyped and overrated. Go in with somewhat lowered expectations and you’ll enjoy it much better. I didn’t think it was as good as Devil’s Backbone.

  9. For work I had the absolute pleasure of watching Rush Hour 3 six or seven times. My life will never be the same.

  11. I’m surprised “Stardust” isn’t rated better. Maybe if they’d stuck closer to the book… some changes have to be made when a book is translated onto the screen I know that but really, why change something that was already a winner?

  12. Grindhouse scored that high? Wow.

And Ratatouille didn’t make the top list? Surprising given that it was one of the highest on Rotten Tomatoes.

  13. Ronan, I’m glad you gave attention to Metacritic.com … I’ve been using it quite often since then.

  14. Clark,
    My mistake. Rat. scores 91.

  15. I assume your mainly looking at major releases, but Once scored an 87. I think there were some other independent/limited releases that did pretty well critically.
