Appreciation for Bergman
There’s nothing I can say about Ingmar Bergman that hasn’t already been said, but since I heard the news of his death yesterday, his films have been on my mind a lot and I just wanted to share why I love Bergman. (more…)

I hope you all have had a chance to watch at least a few episodes of the show. (more…)
Flight of the Conchords- a band comprised of Bret McKenzie and Jemaine Clement, two guys from New Zealand living in NYC. I guess there was a muttonchop reversal at one point, since now Jemaine has them but Bret used to. This is the 6th episode in the series from HBO. These guys are playing themselves.
Episode: “Bowie” (more…)
Tonight I saw The Simpsons Movie at an advanced screening in Dallas. Supergenius also saw a screening in Seattle. Rather than post dueling reviews, we thought we would post a dialog, Siskel-And-Ebert style. What follows is a transcript of our discussion of the movie.

Remember that on Monday we’ll start discussing Wonderfalls, possibly Tim Minear’s finest contribution to television. If you haven’t yet, go out and rent/buy/steal the show and watch up to get ready for Monday!
This thread is for discussing the last Harry Potter book. It’s meant for those who have read the book, and may contain spoilers.
I can’t believe Hagrid was a WOMAN!!
Sonic Youth came to Berkeley High School last night and played their 1989 release, Daydream Nation, in its entirety as part of the “Don’t Look Back” series.
Ok, folks. 5 questions. The one with the most right earns bragging rights and a prize to be determined later. Foretell the future:
1. Who dies? (no more than two names accepted)
2. Who lives? (no more than two names accepted)
3. Snape: loyal or evil?
4. Most shocking twist to come?
5. Best surviving non-Ron/Hermione couple?
Amaze and Astound Us!
Wow, guys, how did we miss this topic before? MARTIAL ARTS. And I’ll say it right now, this movie, Undefeatable, is the front-runner, despite what you Gymkata and Surf Ninjas fans say.
So, what are the worst Martial Arts films available on Netflix?
I suppose everyone will say HAL in 2001.
But I urge you to give some consideration to the ridiculous: The Net. Hackers.
War Games!

It’ll soon be time for a new phone and I’ve been trying to figure out what I want to do. For the most part, the iPhone hasn’t been an option (how can I justify $600 for a phone?). So I’m looking more seriously at a Samsung Blackjack, which is a great phone. Well, it’ll cost me $100 (after rebates) to purchase the phone and $40/mo. for the data plan ON TOP of my regular phone plan. So the phone is relatively cheap and adding the data plan makes it expensive.
Well, last night I did a little math and realized that the Blackjack might not be the best way to go. (more…)
I’ve sent very few. One to U2 when I was a teenager. One to the Waterboys when I was a teenager. An email to Bob Mould a couple years ago (and he replied! it was just a “Thanks Susan—Happy Holidays,” but it was a reply! I took a screen shot of my email inbox and everything).
Then there is this email, which I just sent to a hardcore metal band called Converge:
1) Passion Fruit
2) Raspberries
3) Avocados
4) Huckleberries
5) Peaches
You asked for it, jerks. You made me watch From Justin to Kelly: the Tale of Two American Idols. And I watched it. And my wife watched it too, and my dog.
It was not the worst movie I’ve ever seen. (more…)
I want to comment on HP in general, but I need to be careful not to offend any of you HP-lovers out there. (more…)
It’s about time for our endearingly non-standardized mid-year music recap. (The previous years’ are here and here.) Someone’s gotta do it, and it may as well be me this time. So far, this year has satisfied me immeasurably more than last. I’ll list my favorite albums so far and offer a few brief comments. (more…)
What to do when there’s nothing on TV? (more…)
Unless you have had your head under a rock, you probably recognize this guy. Patton Oswalt is a writer, actor, comedian and man-about-town. He starred in The King of Queens and most recently voiced the rat Remy in Ratatouille. He has over 20 movies to his credit and is widely regarded as one of the best comedians in the business. His new concert album, Werewolves and Lollipops, releases tomorrow on CD and DVD; it is absolutely hilarious. In it, Oswalt touches on a range of topics from KFC Famous Bowls to the Bush administration to roasting William Shatner. It’s a work of (filthy) genius. He agreed to be interviewed for KB.
(Warning: this interview contains profane language. Adults only.)

A Michael Bay movie: big and loud, heavy on explosions and visual effects, with lots of long, slow shots of emotional response. The military figures heavily, but for mostly for show purposes and with little real depth. Hot chicks, fast cars and things that go boom.
Transformers is in many respects perfect for Michael Bay. (more…)
Last night I watched Volver, one of the loveliest films I’ve seen in a long while. Despite its dark themes I walked away from the film touched and uplifted. Almodóvar is a master with sentiment, relationships, color, wit and that ever-evasive quality: loveliness. Another lovely film (and one of my favorite films) is Amelie. (And that has nothing to do with my crush on Audrey Tautou.)
What are some other lovely films that you would recommend?
Being self-employed has its perks. Yesterday we had a company party and went to see Ratatouille. While larger tech companies rent out theaters for Pixar movies we could only muster 12 people (five of them being small children) so logistics were limited to simply getting tickets online earlier in the day.
