  1. Good list.

Juliet’s a bad ass, in her own way. Remember when she took out Kate? Sawyer at least deserves a mention. Michael was homicidal, if not particularly bad ass.

I predict that Jacob will find his way on the list pretty quickly.

As much as I love Vincent (I’m crossing my fingers for a Vincent flashback episode), he’s never done a bad ass thing in his doggie life.

  2. On my list there would be only three people:

    Eko
    Jin
    Ethan

(Ethan reminds me of Ivan Drago from Rocky IV with his super-human strength.)

  3. Mikhail is way more of a badass than Kate.

  4. What’s Sawyer’s real name? Maybe I’m missing something …

  5. Uh, Mikhail got his ass handed to him by both Jin and Locke.

I think Kate could take him out.

  6. Plus, Sawyer is soft. He’s more of a lover than a fighter.

The only thing he’s ever done a number on is a tree frog.

  7. There is a case to be made for Juliet, but I think if it was a knock-down, drag-out cat fight, Kate would get the best of her.

  8. Brian, I think you’re missing a key episode, like last week’s. That was no tree frog Sawyer was doing a number on.

Bakunin could easily take down Kate.

  9. The guy was tied up. It’s not hard to be a badass to a guy in chains. Jin is a bit of a badass, although it’s hard to say how much of one. We haven’t seen a lot in that regard. Probably the take down of the Russian was the first real indication.

Locke, especially after last night, is a bad ass though. It’s when he loses faith and gets all depressed that he’s a wuss beyond wuss. (I still remember the flashbacks from that first flashback of his with the sex line woman he was trying to convince to go to Australia with him)

  10. Clark, don’t forget Jin’s past experience as strong arm for Paik Heavy Industries.

  11. Locke is a former wuss and that’s what makes him the biggest badass of all.

  12. I’m not sure why Locke is a badass and Sawyer isn’t … but it’s interesting to think about the reasons Sawyer isn’t a badass or is a pseudo-badass.

Eko may be the truest badass of them all. Before he was killed we saw scenes of him slicing and dicing people and then striding away from the corpses. I’m still a little disappointed we lost him.

Ben is definitely #1. Kills his papa. Kills his own people. Manipulates everyone. He’s genuinely scary and it would be even harder now for someone to make a case that he’s good.

Right. I hope that theory can finally be put into the deepest recesses of a dwarf mine.

  14. Greg, we know Jin was a strong arm but all the times he’s shown in flashbacks as a strong man he’s anything but a bad ass.

I agree about Ecko. I was pretty disappointed with how they sent him out.

BTW – you think Ben wanted Locke to kill Locke’s father as a parallel to his own situation?

  15. Sawyer and Sayid for me. I was hoping Jack would fall this season and that Sawyer & Sayid could have filled the leadership vacuum.

And yes, watching Jin roundhouse kick Mikhail was totally awesome.

  16. Sun, duh. Bad. Ass. Way more than Crybaby Kate.

  17. I don’t even really like Kate. What’s with the attraction?

Jin above Sayid?? I don’t think so.

You were right to leave Sawyer off the list. He’s really soft inside.

    Ben rocks.

  18. Lately, Kate has not done some butt-kicking, but if you go back to the episodes when she was robbing banks and killing her father and evading authorities you will realize she’s a badass.

Jin could take Sayid. He tortures people, that’s about it. He tortures women, and anyone who is capable of doing that is not such a badass after all, but a coward.

    Comment by Brian G — May 11, 2007 @ 1:33 am

  19. I s’pose.

But I think Kate works out of desperation, not some internal sense of butt-kicking-ethically-motivated behavior (well maybe when she killed her dad), which is sort of a requirement for the moniker. I mean, she’s no Linda Hamilton in T2, you know?

    Comment by meems — May 11, 2007 @ 2:28 am

  20. Yeah, I think Kate is an annoying, one-note character (though I think part of my problem is with the actress playing her), and I don’t really see her as all that bad. She’s also stupid, which doesn’t really help her case.

  21. No mention of the monster/ mist/ dark cloud?
No reference to the Medusa spider?
The shark with the Dharma tatoo?
    The polar bear?

    How anthropocentric of you.

  22. No mention of Hurley in the non-badass category?? I always thought he was the ultimate cupcake.

    Comment by john scherer — May 11, 2007 @ 2:44 pm

  23. I’ve seen Hurley slap around a few people in the show. In fact, I think he flopped on top of Sawyer in one episode. It was very satisfying.

  24. My top three:

    1. Smokey the Magic Smoke Monster (takes out Eko. That’s badassssss to the max!)
    2. Claire (giving birth on a desert island – that takes some serious butt kickery)
    3. Kate (only unmarried female castaway to have sex and still be alive a few episodes later. Obvioulsy the island knows not to mess with her!)

    Bottom Three:
    1. Danielle (was the wife of the President of the Interstellar Alliance, and she gave it all up to go live on a desert island? LAME!)
    2. Mikhail (Eyepatches are so 1990s! What – does he think he’s a pirate or something? What a wannabe.)
    3. Bernard (makes henpecked husbands look good).

    ;-)

  25. I think Eko is still more badass than Smoky. He faced it down, twice. And managed to piss it off enough that, yeah, it killed him dead the second time, but he was stoic and unrepentant to the end.

Kate is fairly badass too. I’d rank her about at Locke’s level, along with Sayid, who beyond being gifted at torture is crafty and an astute judge of character. Kate’s as good at the tracking/survival stuff as Locke, and remember when she and Sawyer went to rescue Carl? Sawyer hesitated, she knocked the guard out without a backwards glance. I think she’s only stupid/annoying when she’s around Jack. Who is an arrogant creep.

Jin’s tough, as is Desmond, but I’m not sure either could be called badass.

  26. Also, there was something not quite human about Ethan Rom. I think he might have been a robot. Robots don’t count.
