  1. French Kiss was horrible. As was Joe Vs the Volcano.

    1) Sleepless in Seattle (because it’s Seattle, and because of the scene where she follows him in her car, when he’s in a boat, from Lake Union to Alki).

    2) You’ve Got Mail (because hey, instant messaging!)

    3) When Harry Met Sally (you all know why)

    4) When A Man Loves A Woman (it’s a tearjerker, not a comedy, but hey, Andy Garcia)

    5) City of Angels (only because I loved the original so much—Wings of Desire)

  2. French Kiss stands as one of my favorite rom-coms. Totally cheesy, but there’s something about it that I fully enjoy. And You’ve Got Mail is terrible.

  3. Wrong, wrong, wrong!

When Harry Met Sally is number 1
Joe vs. the Volcano is number 2
    Top Gun is number 3

There are no other good Meg Ryan rom-coms.

  4. I suggest Hanging Up as #5.

  5. I actually liked “Addicted to Love,” even though it’s got a sadistic tone to it. (Actually, I think that may be *why* I liked it.)

Couldn’t bring myself to watch the Wim Wenders remake.

  6. You forgot about Kate and Leopold, where she jumps off the Brooklyn bridge and back into the nineteenth century.

  7. French Kiss completely sucked, Rusty. Here’s the REAL list:

    1. When Harry Met Sally
    2. Top Gun — “Goose, you big stud, take me to bed or lose me forever!”
    3. Sleepless in Seattle
    4. Courage Under Fire
    5. Joe vs. the Volcano

  8. Some would argue that Top Gun and Courage Under Fire are not, in fact, romantic comedies. To them I give the razzberry. Top Gun is a definitive romantic comedy all the way. Courage Under Fire? Meh, maybe not, but that’s my story, and I’m sticking to it.

  9. Courage Under Fire gave me a migraine.

  10. SG,
There is no way Courage Under Fire is a rom-com. Nice try though. I thought it was a pretty good movie. Top Gun could be considered a romantic comedy, but not Meg Ryan’s. She was a minor character. When I say “Meg Ryan Rom Coms” I’m talking about Meg-Ryan-is-America’s-Sweetheart vehicles, not Meg-Ryan-happened-to-be-in-this-good-rom-com movies.

    And French Kiss rules.

  11. French Kiss wasn’t nearly as bad as, say, IQ. Great gosh that was awful. At least French Kiss had Kevin Kline. I have no memory of Addicted to Love, but I know I’ve seen it.

She was pretty good in Top Gun, but it’s an action movie.

I guess I’d pretty much agree with Rusty’s top 5, but I’d move When Harry Met Sally to no. 4.

  12. What was the one where she starred opposite Nicholas Cage? I believe Cage played a fallen angel that fell cause he like her so much, only to have her get run over by a truck? Man that was a terrible movie!

  13. That was the Wim Wenders remake.

    Comment by Allison — April 9, 2007 @ 11:02 am

  14. You know the Meg Ryan movie I really hated? The one that starred John Cusack and Julie Roberts.

    Comment by HP — April 9, 2007 @ 11:04 am

  15. Ha! America’s Sweethearts? That sucked even without Meg Ryan.

    Comment by Allison — April 9, 2007 @ 11:20 am

  16. What about Innerspace? It’s as much a rom-com as Top Gun.

    Comment by Tim J. — April 9, 2007 @ 11:26 am

  17. Oh yeah, I remember that being good. Okay, that’s number 4 on my list now.

  18. While I have no opinion on the Meg Ryan list (although I have a guilty pleasure of liking the one where she was Einstein’s daughter) can I just say how totally freakish looking she is since she got her plastic surgery? Seriously, remember how the victims of the Joker in the Tim Burton Batman looked? That’s her.

  19. Stunning trend among Hollywood actresses right now. Rene Russo was in a movie recently and her face was hideous.

    Comment by Tim J — April 9, 2007 @ 4:01 pm

  20. Agreed, her surgery was really botched.

    Comment by Supergenius — April 9, 2007 @ 4:47 pm

  21. i.e., see here.

  22. eeewww. That was yucky surgery all right.

    1. Sleepless in Seattle — no contest
    2. French Kiss
    3. When Harry Met Sally
    4. You’ve Got Mail
    5. The Doors — well, Jim Morrison was kind of romantic. And wasn’t there a scene where someone threw a turkey across the room? There’s the comedy.

  23. She looks better in those pictures than she does in the recent trailers for the movie she’s in.

    Comment by Clark — April 10, 2007 @ 10:02 am

  24. 1. When Harry Met Sally (more for Carrie Fisher and Bruno Kirby, though)

    2. Prelude to a Kiss

    3. Sleepless in Seattle

    4. You’ve Got Mail (for the bookstore - I’d kill to own her bookstore)

    5. Innerspace

Meg Ryan was on “Charles in Charge”. I love imdb.

    Comment by Jennifer — April 10, 2007 @ 11:57 am

  25. You’ve Got Mail is my favorite Chick Flick EVER… and, much like Shawshank Redemption, it’s always on somewhere!

    Ditto the bookstore, Jennifer.

    Comment by tracy m — April 11, 2007 @ 10:26 am

  26. Amen to the bookstore. But for me, the chemistry just wasn’t there for Meg and Tom in You’ve Got Mail. Sleepless in Seattle did a better job with the romance and they spent almost no time together onscreen.

Personally, I prefer old Gidget movies and silly musicals from the 60’s for my chick flick needs. Maybe I’m old school. Or just cheesy.

    Comment by Allison — April 11, 2007 @ 11:21 am

  27. Allison, I agree to a degree. Although Sleepless in Seattle is sort of one of the best “chick flicks” ever made. It’s hard to top that. While You’ve Got Mail didn’t totally work, it was still a fun little film.

The Doors is kind of funny. I saw it on TV so I presume the theatrical version was much raunchier. But there’s this one unforgettable scene. Morrison is way whigged out on pain killers and what not and they’re trying to cut an album. So they bring Ryan into the recording booth to give Morrison some “encouragement.” It kind of changed how I saw her.

Yeah, yeah. I know. Actors personal lives often have little to do with their screen and PR personae. Reportedly Ryan never liked here personae and was quite the wild child in real life.
