Rediscoveries
Before Chris Cornell sang James Bond songs, before Audioslave, before Spoonman and Black Hole Sun, there was Soundgarden’s 1991 record Badmotorfinger. My wife just picked me up a copy for five Euros. I’d forgotten all about it, but listening to stuff like Rusty Cage and Mind Riot has been a fun rediscovery.
I saw Soundgarden a couple of days after Kurt Cobain blew his head off. It was a moody gig and bassist Ben Shepherd walked off stage near the end and didn’t reappear (as he was wont to do, apparently). No doubt Susan will tell us about hanging out with Cornell and Kim Thayil (one hairy beast of a guitarist) back in the day.
I can only take so much of Cornell’s bellowing, but Soundgarden were good stuff. Useless trivia: drummer Matt Cameron now plays with Pearl Jam, another example of Seattle inbreeding.
Anyone else rediscovered old music faves recently?
“I can only take so much of Cornell’s bellowing”
Man, just stab me through the heart.
I haven’t really rediscovered any old faves recently. Maybe Hazel O’Connor and Olivia Newton John.

I thought Badmotorfinger was pretty good. It was, however, Louder Than Love, which is in the pantheon of great album’s for me.

Though, “I’m looking California and feeling Minnesota” is one of my favorite lyrics, ever.

I’m partial to Screaming Life and Ultramega OK, myself. But I agree on that lyric. Totally classic.

Rusty Cage is such a great song.

Badmotorfinger was the first “grunge” album I bought, back in 1991. I had seen the videos for “Outshined” and “Man in the Box” — on Headbanger’s Ball I believe — and only had enough money for one album. (I thought “Alive” and “Teen Spirit” were such good singles that they were probably one-hit-wonders…)

“Badmotorfinger” is one of the best albums EVER in my book… left me lying on the floor stunned and in love.
Ditto what Susan said- just stab me though the heart!

There was some kind of special on PBS about the Beach Boys the other day. I liked the harmonies on some of the songs.

In regards to Chris Cornell - he’s very nasal. I did like one of the Audioslave songs though.

I liked about half the first album of Audioslave. I didn’t like it at first but it really grew on me. The second album was a waste. There was one so-so song and that was it.
The James Bond song he did I thought was awful until I saw it in the film where it surprisingly fit perfectly.

hmm, I actually really liked the first audioslave album, and though the second was okay. it’s not normally a type of music I listen to, but my husband played the first album through a couple of times and I enjoyed it–had a lot more diversity to it than I first assumed it would.

Still, I don’t think Cornell took advantage of the band. They were much more involved in the first album than second. I’m kind of glad Rage is back together though. Here’s hoping they do more than a few concerts together.
