Before you watch your DVRed episode of Heros tonight you might want to know that you’re contributing to the failings of the networks. Bother you? No, me neither. It is interesting how much top shows are DVRed though. Fully 1/3 of Office viewers view it on DVR. Lost has about 23%. I halfway wonder if Lost’s figure is because so many of us don’t have the patience to wait an other hour and avoid commercials.

Before Chris Cornell sang James Bond songs, before Audioslave, before Spoonman and Black Hole Sun, there was Soundgarden’s 1991 record Badmotorfinger. My wife just picked me up a copy for five Euros. I’d forgotten all about it, but listening to stuff like Rusty Cage and Mind Riot has been a fun rediscovery.
I saw Soundgarden a couple of days after Kurt Cobain blew his head off. It was a moody gig and bassist Ben Shepherd walked off stage near the end and didn’t reappear (as he was wont to do, apparently). No doubt Susan will tell us about hanging out with Cornell and Kim Thayil (one hairy beast of a guitarist) back in the day.
I can only take so much of Cornell’s bellowing, but Soundgarden were good stuff. Useless trivia: drummer Matt Cameron now plays with Pearl Jam, another example of Seattle inbreeding. (more…)
I’m not really a huge comic guy. I largely stopped buying comics right around the time I was 13 or 14 and discovered computers. However I do have pretty fond memories of my comic days. Back when I was a kid I’d collect bottles at the tourist town I spent my summers in. I’d actually make quite a bit of money, all things considered. (And I worked pretty hard at it - going to all the dumpsters in the camp grounds for alcohol and pop bottles) Then I’d not only buy the new comics I wanted, but would get old comics from the 60’s. I don’t know why but I really loved the Marvel stuff from their golden age up through the first few years of the 70’s. After that I thought Marvel kind of lost it, with a few exceptions in the early 80’s. (X-Men was quite good there for a while)
Anyway I bring all this up to note that Marvel is now putting complete editions of comics on DVD. Personally I’d rather have a collection of a variety of comics from a particular decade. But hey, that’s me. I have to admit though that had I spare change laying around (which right now I don’t) I’d love to pick up a few of these.
I took my youngest son to see Heaven and Hell w/Megadeth and Machine Head on Wednesday. He’s a huge Megadeth fan. Heaven and Hell, for those who don’t know, is basically Black Sabbath w/Dio on vocals rather than Ozzy.
I’m a little in love with Dave Mustaine now.

All hail the rather excellent Indie-dance band, the Sunshine Underground. The lads are originally from Shropshire (sleepy, rural county bordering Wales), but formed in Leeds and subsequently earned the Live Band of the Year trophy at the Leeds Music Awards. Their debut album, Raise The Alarm, was released in August 2006.
Bassist Daly Smith agreed to tell us a bit about the band: (more…)
OK folks, we’re down to the last few episodes of the season for the major network shows: Lost, Heroes, 24, American Idol, DWTS, House. Let’s put in some predictors for what happens. (more…)
This episode could have been subtitled, “Or, What to Expect When You’re Expecting (After Crash Landing On a Mysterious Island).”
Spoilers, ramblings and obscurities based on tonight’s episode after the break.
If I wanted to be cynical I could probably find a lot to complain about or make fun of in last night’s “Idol Gives Back” episode. But I don’t want to be cynical right now. I’ll just be glad that some people in need will be helped and I’ll be thankful for the people giving the help. (more…)

What bands can you think of that sounded vastly different in their early days than they did later?

After watching this video I realized that if Will Farrell wanted to be my friend I’d probably let him. I love his straight-faced, dopey humor and would imagine we’d always have a good time.
What famous person would you not kick out of your group of friends?

It’s getting to the point where some good singers might start going home. One bad song choice can do you in. I fear for Lakisha tonight. Her “Jesus, Take the Wheel” was the worst last night. She probably has enough momentum and good will built up that she’ll survive, but I wouldn’t be surprised at all to see her in the bottom three. (more…)
I’ve not written about 24 much the last while because frankly it got a tad unengaging and predictable. However I’ve hope again after last night’s episode. I think it good that Jack is going for something more personal and less “save the world.” It’s returning to what made the first season so good. It was still fairly predictable right up to the President going into coma. And I have to admit that I’m none too thrilled with Powers Booth doing his usual bit. (Can someone please get this guy some help with his type-casting?) They just make the VP too obviously evil. One almost expects him to have a waxed mustache and a girl tied up on train tracks somewhere.

It was AWESOME. I wasn’t that sold on his new material before the show, but hearing it live reminded me that his stuff always has to grow on me—which why I love him so much. I’m still discovering new things in his songs I’ve had for years now.

The Frames

4/11/07
I’ve been struggling with how to do this review any differently than the last one. Both shows were incredible. The Frames did a 2 hour set, and by the end of it, no one was ready for them to leave.
