  1. Jerry Maguire had me puking at hello.

  2. Bump Almost Famous up to No. 2, and I think you’ve got it!

  3. Never seen Almost Famous, and only caught part of Jerry Maguire on TV (shouldn’t it be McGuire?), thought it sucked.

    1. Fast Times at Ridgemont High
    2. Say Anything
    3. Singles

The story/characters of Singles was lame but it had Tad in it, so it rules.

  4. Singles had Eddie Vedder, didn’t it?

  5. Amy Heckerling deserves some credit for “Fast Times.”

Almost Famous is a better film (a much better film, I’m tempted to say) than Say Anything. I think we watch that film with a bit of nostalgia.

And can’t we find something else to swap in for Jerry Maguire?

  6. Singles had Kim Thayil and Chris Cornell of Soundgarden, too. But it gets the most point for including Tad.

  7. I went with FT over AF because it has stood the test of times. There are scenes and characters in it that are almost definitive. Almost Famous hasn’t yet stood the test of time.

  8. Amy Heckerling does deserve some credit for Fast Times. Of course, she is also responsible for all the Look Who’s Talking movies.

I don’t mind moving Jerry Maguire out, but what to replace it with? Vanilla Sky? Elizabethtown? Let’s face it people, Cameron’s in a slump.

  9. Actually, I have changed my mind. Jerry Maguire is a better movie than it is given credit for. It deserves its spot.

I believe that Say Anything wins over Almost Famous for the same reason that Fast Times does. It is simply much more deeply ingrained in our culture, film and otherwise.

  10. HP, ah, so this is a top 5 of influence, rather than quality? :)

  11. Singles, has one of the best soundtracks, ever.

  12. Not necessarily, I just think that Almost Famous has yet to prove itself to be as enduring as the other two. Endurance to me is a sign of quality.

  13. HP #12, I’ll agree with that. On the other hand, “more deeply ingrained in our culture” is probably a measure of influence rather than endurance, right?

  14. I don’t really see Almost Famous standing the test of time. What do you first think of when you think of this movie? Nothing really stands out.

  15. Years ago I really liked Say Anything. But I tried watching it again years later and it seemed pretty silly.

  16. That’s the problem with films that resonate with you when you were young. They rarely survive into adulthood because so much changes.

  17. Clark#16 - I will agree with you on some, but Say Anything? Totally stands up. “I gave her my heart and she gave me a…pen.” Come on! That’s good stuff right there.

Singles is great because of what it stood for in my life. And had good music.

  18. backing up Gabby

“I don’t want to sell anything, buy anything, or process anything as a career. I don’t want to sell anything bought or processed, or buy anything sold or processed, or process anything sold, bought, or processed, or repair anything sold, bought, or processed.”

“I got a question. If you guys know so much about women, how come you’re here at like the Gas ‘n’ Sip on a Saturday night completely alone drinking beers with no women anywhere?”

    “By choice, man.”

The first thing that stands out to me about Almost Famous?

Billy Crudup on the roof of the fan’s house.

    The second?

    Frances McDormand.

    Especially the phone call scenes.

  19. I’ve seen Say Anything 47 times. That is not an exaggeration. I was obsessed with it as a teenager and re-watching it last year brought back great memories.

I consider it and Almost Famous not only Crowe’s best films, but some of the greatest movies ever.

His most recent movie that I can’t even remember the title? Not so much.
