Greatest College Game Ever (Sorry D-Train)

by Rusty

The BCS can suck it. Boise State’s win over Oklahoma last night was the greatest football game I’ve ever seen. David not only beat Goliath but they did so with three perfectly executed trick plays, all on fourth downs (or a PAT). The dude called a hook-and-ladder (lateral) play on 4th-and-loooooooong with basically no time left in the game. He called on his walk-on wide receiver to make the 4th-and-goal touchdown pass. And then, if there was any doubt as to what metal his balls were made of, he goes for 2 (rather than kick the safe PAT) and does so with a Statue of Liberty play. This was against Oklahoma, the team who had an argument for a shot at the championship (except the controversial loss at Oregon prevented it). It wasn’t even supposed to be close.

This was perfect football, folks.

And the BCS can go to hell. I will be cheering for Florida in the championship, not because I like Florida, but because I want to see how they spin Boise State out of a national championship.

  1. I stood in front of my TV just gawking at the last 90 second of that game. It was un-be-lievable. Seriously — I could hardly believe my eyes. This game definitely gives BYU’s “Miracle Bowl” a run for its money.

    Wow.

  2. Well, if it were “perfect football,” Oklahoma would never have taken the lead on the interception. But it was still totally worth staying up until 1 AM for.

  3. LL,
Well, if “perfect football” means “perfectly played football” then you’re right, but then again, there could never be such a thing because both sides would get perfect tackles and perfect runs, cancelling each other out. I guess when I say “perfect football” I mean football which is perfectly entertaining.

  4. Well said Rusty! Well said. This should be the final nail in the coffin of the BCS

  5. I still think last year’s Rose Bowl was a little better, mostly due to the level of talent on the field and what was a t stake.

But, HOLY CRAP! Did he just call a Statue of Liberty play!!!! Did he just propose to his girlfriend!!!! It was definitely the best ending to a game ever.

  6. hands down the most entertaining ending to a bowl game i’ve ever seen. the highs and lows each team experienced in the last two minutes of regulation and overtime, and to cap it off three trick plays all being pulled off flawlessly (after playing straight up football for the first 3 & 7/8’s of the game).

it seems like much more momentum is gathering behind the idea of a playoff than ever before. please let it happen!

  7. Seriously, is there a college football fan out there that doesn’t want a playoff to happen?

  8. Even the announcers were wondering why they hadn’t run any trick plays…and then, BOOM! Amazing.

  9. I love trick plays. Except for The Play. Cal sucks a big one.

  10. Seriously an amazing game, with a great great ending. Anyone see the guy propose to the cheerleader? Awesome. Save the cheerleader, save the world, as it were.

  11. I saw only a small piece of it and turned the channel. Ever since this morning I’ve been reading articles and posts about this amazing game. Now I hate myself.

I’m going to find a recording and watch it.

    #9,

haha, that’s still going to be the greatest play in college football. What happened? Were you the trombone player? ;)

  13. The ball was down and there was a forward lateral. That’s all I’ve got to say.

  15. Greatest college game? Miami vs. OSU national championship 2002. OU got in the BCS only due to a Texas Collapse and injuries at the end of the season. I thought that next to wake forest OU was the weakest team in the BCS (and Adrian Peterson was not in playing shape.) However with that said it was a great game to watch and OU did a great job this year with all the trouble that they had all season. A playoff may happen but not for a few more years. We can only hope for a plus one game in the next 2-3 years. There is a lot of coaches against it in the BCS. If there is a playoff it would be a mere 8 teams. Which means the BCS bowl teams in a payoff system. So BYU would still be out of luck.

  16. I was a true-not-blue, hate-Boise-State, Univ of Idaho alum (during the good years when we’d always send BSU home with their tail between their legs), so I shrugged at the hype. But even I had to root for BSU and be happy for their victory. Still, my kids are required to know the Vandal fight song. Someday . . . .
