Battlestar Galactica – Building Interest

by Clark

So did Battlestar Galactica maintain the return to form that last week’s extremely well done episode brought? It was, in my opinion, far more of a mixed bag. The bits with Baltar were very compelling. Further we figure out just how much the humans know about Baltar. The big question was how much more he was going to give up.

In My Time of Dying…

by Clark

Over at my blog I had up a discussion of what books I’d read on my death bed. Everyone expected philosophy but pretty much I’d confine myself to poetry and physics for the most part. It got me thinking though. What songs would I want to be listening to in my last days? I nearly put it up at my philosophy blog but figured folks here would probably have more interesting suggestions.

Name These Cheesy Rock Tunes

by Susan M

I’ve spliced together clips of songs to see how many you can all identify. This week’s clips are all of a brand I like to think of as “cheeserock.” Yes, that means mostly 70′s/80′s stuff.

I’ll give you a day or two to make your guesses, then I’ll post the answers. There are clips from 18 songs this time.

Song clips are in the radio.blog: “Name These Cheesy Rock Tunes”

NOTE: You might want to listen and make your guesses before reading the comments, or other people’s guesses might spoil your fun.

UPDATE: I’ll paste the answers in down below. If you haven’t had a chance to make your guesses, don’t click on the “more” link until you have!

Deerhoof—Friend Opportunity

by Tom

Deerhoof is one of the coolest bands around. They’ve been making some of the most exciting, consistently excellent music since the turn of the millenium. They are now a trio, having amicably parted ways with one of their guitarists, Chris Cohen, since their critically well-received 2005 album, The Runners Four. With that album they made a bit of a departure from the abrasive, noisy, abstract sound of their previous several albums towards accessibility and songiness. Friend Opportunity takes them further down that accessible rock road. Normally I might complain about that kind of shift, being as how I’m a sucker for quirky musical experimentation, but Deerhoof haven’t become less interesting as they’ve become more accessible and Friend Opportunity is just too good to complain about. The Fine Art of Selling Out

by Supergenius

I have no talent to sell, but if I did, I sure hope I would sell out in a better way than John Mellencamp. Read his side of his pathetic Chevy sell-out ads here; then ask yourself, are the Who (CSI) or Cat Power (Cingular, Chanel) any better?

Fundamentally, why does that fact of selling one’s talent to a single corporation seem so reprehensible compared to selling out to a record company?

My Journey From Artist To Designer To Who Knows What

by Rusty

NOTE: this is a self-indulgent post about my history as an artist and designer. It’s probably too long for you to enjoy but I thought it might be interesting to see the evolution of one mindframe to another. My feelings won’t be hurt if you aren’t interested in my personal history.

It was in junior high that I first realized I had artistic skill. It puzzled me to see other people in art class failing so miserably at drawing the most basic objects. I had always assumed that drawing (the most basic and perhaps most important skill an artist can have) was something everyone could do. Therefore when my classmates turned in the chicken scratch they called still-lifes I convinced myself it was because they weren’t really trying. (more…)

If Only I Could Blame It On The Refs

by Rusty

After the Super Bowl I was furious. Now I’m just sad. We (the Seahawks) were given a freebee with Romo’s bobble and played a solid game against a team that was supposed to blow us out. The game could have gone either way hinging on any play (for both teams). If it were a blowout it would have been much easier to watch, this was just too intense for us to lose. But, it was a well-earned win by Chicago. Congrats to those guys.

But the truth is that these playoffs are turning out to be pretty dang good. And it’s all NFC for me at this point. Go Saints or Bears!

Next Cinemasochist Theme

by Supergenius

The next Cinemasochist theme: Time Travel. Black Knight? Planet of the Apes remake? Timecop 2? Bring it on, suckas. My flux capacitor needs 1.21 gigawatts of celluloid crapola.

To repeat the rules: you all discuss the worst time travel movies, I pick the 3 worst ones available on Netflix, then we vote on which one I have to watch and review.

Apple Reinvents the Phone

by Clark

The buzz has been building for the past few months. Denials, rumors it’s on, rumors it’s off. Steve Jobs somehow manages to capture more buzz for his yearly trips to MacWorld San Francisco than Bill Gates can dream off. Yes it’s unfair. Yes, a lot of it is hype and not content. But this year (as has so often been the case) Steve Jobs delivered. (more…)

News: Shyamalan and “Avatar: TLAB”

by BTD Greg

I’ve got very mixed feelings about this report from Aint it Cool News that everyone’s most/least favorite auteur director M. Night Shyamalan is planning one to three movies based on the Nickelodeon animated series “Avatar: The Last Airbender.” (Edit: AICN is just passing on what has been reported in Variety.) My concern is that Shymalan will screw it up.

Buckeyes or Gators?

by Rusty

Who I think will win: Buckeyes
Who I want to win: Gators

The truth is that I’m ambivalent on both of these teams but my loathing of the BCS trumps my respect for Troy Smith (which is significant). Like I said before, I want the Gators to win because I want to see the BCS and sportswriters squirm as they try to justify the current system (and not have a playoff).

No, they haven’t called me to be on the show.  grrrrrr.  My time in the contestant pool ends in May, I think. If you get in you lower my chances of getting on, so I have mixed feelings about this… (more…)
