What are you a sucker for?

by Wm Morris

I have had the house to myself for the past two weeks and as a result my own tastes hold sway (and since the only thing they have to hold sway over is me, there’s been a lot of sway-ness). Much to my chagrin, I have discovered that there are some things that I’m a major sucker for. (more…)

Another show to watch??

by Supergenius

Like my tivo wasn’t full enough, it looks like Fox may have an interesting new show this Spring — FOR ONCE. DRIVE is by Tim Minnear, of “Angel,” “Firefly,” and “Wonderfalls” fame. It’s pitched as “Magnolia on wheels.” Here‘s the Variety story with some more details.

As AICN said, and I hope they’re right:

Survivor : Amazing Race :: Lost : Drive.

Audio Book Review: A Scanner Darkly

by BTD Greg

A Scanner Darkly

When I was a child, I spake as a child, I understood as a child, I thought as a child: but when I became a man, I put away childish things. For now we see through a glass, darkly; but then face to face: now I know in part; but then shall I know even as also I am known. – 1 Corinthians 13:11-12.

During a recent attempt to tighten household expenses, I discovered that I’m currently spending about $200 a month on gasoline and about $80 in tolls just to get to and from work every month. The only upside I’ve been able to uncover in this situation is that it also means I have an opportunity, should I take it, to listen to audio books during my daily commute. Recently, I finished listening to the unabridged audio book version of Philip K. Dick’s A Scanner Darkly.

“Four seconds was the longest wait”

by Greg

I see the Golden Gate Bridge almost every single day, but I see it differently now than I did a few years ago. In October 2003, the month I moved to the Bay Area, I read an article in the New Yorker that discussed the Golden Gate bridge’s relentless attraction of the suicidal. Because Golden Gate Bridge jumpers are not reported by the media, it was mildly shocking to learn of the sheer numbers of suicides that occur there, year after year. I wondered Who? How? And most fundamentally, Why? (more…)

Name These Love Songs

by Susan M

I’ve spliced together clips of songs to see how many you can all identify. This week’s clips are all love songs. Or at least, they fit my definition of a love song! Some of these might be a little tough.

I’ll give you a day or two to make your guesses, then I’ll post the answers. There are clips from 14 songs this time.

Song clips are in the radio.blog: “Name These Love Songs”

NOTE: You might want to listen and make your guesses before reading the comments, or other people’s guesses might spoil your fun.

UPDATE: I’ll paste the answers in down below. If you haven’t had a chance to make your guesses, don’t click on the “more” link until you have!

Voxtrot: Two EPs of pure goodness

by Susan M

Voxtrot is your typical indie band: catchy songs with enough words shoved into them to give you a headache, a cutesy-voiced singer, and 80′s influences worn on the sleeves of their Style Council and Housemartins t-shirts.

And I love them. I mean, really, really, love them.

Concert Review: 2006 Bridge School Benefit

by Greg

The Bridge School Benefit, last weekend in Mountain View, California, was a series of firsts for me: First Bridge School Benefit, first all-acoustic show, first “festival”-style lineup, and first time bringing my kids (ages 5 and 2) to a rock concert. Though we had to leave before the final acts because of the kids, it was a fantastic experience. Here’s a brief summary of what the show is and what we saw. (more…)

Concert Review: Iron Maiden w/Three Inches of Blood

by Susan M

That’s right, the band I’ve seen live more than any other, the band I’ve seen play at little tiny bars with about 5 other people in attendance, the band I’ve driven to Vegas to see, the band I’ve given packages of new socks and mix cds of 70′s and 80′s cheesy rock while on tour, the band whose guitarist is kind enough to hang out and talk guitar and videogames with my youngest son, Three Inches of Blood, opened for Iron Maiden Saturday in Irvine, CA, and I was there!

Yanks go home! Britpop poll

by The Brit

Damon Albarn famously said that “if punk was about getting rid of hippies, then I’m getting rid of grunge.”* I think he won, in the UK at least. Since Britpop, British bands have ruled Britannia (Coldplay, Travis, Arctic Monkeys, etc.). (more…)

The Red Shirt Raffle

by HP

Has your favorite TV show gone a little stale?  Are there about 4,000 characters in your TV show?  Wouldn’t it be nice if the producers weeded out some of the dead weight?

Well, that’s what this post is for.  As you know, when tv shows get a bit stale, often times the producers will try to liven it up by killing someone off.  Usually, it is a minor or secondary character, so that the main actors can go for Emmys by reacting to it.  Sometimes it is a main character.

Lost, for instance, has killed off characters both major and minor (I’ll always miss you, Steve…not Scott).  It adds a certain tension to the show if you really aren’t sure if the characters are going to survive the season.

To that end, I would like to propose a dead pool for TV characters this season.  I, for instance, believe that either Jack, Kate, or Sawyer will not survive the season (or, at least, I hope one won’t as I am very, very tired of the UST).  I have been told that I am on crack for having this theory, but I am sticking to my guns on it.

Put your money where your mouth is.  All you’ll earn is bragging rights, but isn’t that worth it by itself?  Who lives and who dies?

Name These Mystery-Theme Tunes

by Susan M

I’ve spliced together clips of songs to see how many you can all identify. This week’s clips are all share a common theme, but you’ll have to guess what it is this time. (Hint: the titles will make it obvious.) Some of these might be a little tough.

I’ll give you a day or two to make your guesses, then I’ll post the answers. There are clips from 14 songs this time.

Cinemasochist poll: Horror Movies – UPDATE

by Supergenius

Wow, some bad’uns this time. I’ve taken a couple of liberties: instead of The Mongrel, which actually got some decent ratings and wasn’t on Netflix, I went with Watchers 3, which no one loves, and which involves a mutant beast in South America vs. a government-trained golden retriever.

And I couldn’t pass up Chupacabra Terror, which involves yet another south-of-the-border beast, this one on a cruise ship.

Third candidate: Sean Cassity’s pick, House of the Dead, rated one of the worst movies of all time at IMDB.

All three movies get no more than one star at Netflix. Many of the other more choice ones from the thread weren’t on Netflix at all. Sorry.

POLL RESULTS: looks like I’m watching HOUSE OF THE DEAD. Ugh.

Poll is at the top of the post. (more…)

Don’t Call it a Comeback (Just Call it Ridiculous)

by Rusty

I know we just had a sports post but after watching last night’s Bears/Cardinals game, one of the most entertaining football games I’ve ever seen, I figured this would be a good place to discuss sports comebacks. Last night is truly what sports are all about (even though I was cheering for the Cards). (more…)

CBGB: No Longer Uplifiting Gormandizers

by Tom

Yesterday Patti Smith played the final show at the legendary CBGB club in Manhattan before it closed its doors forever. The lease expired and the landlord had other uses in mind for the space. I don’t have any strong feelings about the passing of CBGB, but I thought I’d pay my respects by posting some CBGB-associated music to the radio.blog. (more…)

Scary Music: Wolf Eyes

by Susan M

Do you have any music you like to play on Halloween?

When I was a kid, there was always one house in the neighborhood that went all out. Ringing their doorbell would trigger scary music blaring from speakers hidden on their porch. And the best: a ghost that you thought was harmlessly hanging from their gutter was actually on a cord and would come swooping down at you.

Well the new Wolf Eyes album, Human Animal, released on Sub Pop last month, is the perfect Halloween soundtrack.
