Top 5 Greatest Game Shows

by Rusty

1) Jeopardy!
2) The Price is Right
3) Family Feud
4) The Newlywed Game
5) To Tell the Truth

Sorry, Wheel of Fortune doesn’t break the top 50. That show is TERRIBLE and very un-entertaining.

  1. Dude, where’s “Press My Luck”? NO WHAMMIES!

You’re also missing Hollywood Squares and Let’s Make A Deal.

  2. Yeah, those are good but are they better than the ones above?

  3. What’s the one with the big panel of stars from the 70’s and they’d have to fill in a blank in a phrase? Ah here it is, the Match Game. Phrase like:

I wish my mother-in-law would stop barging in our house. Last night, she came in while my wife and I were _blank_ing on the couch.

    My new favorite is Lingo.

  4. What about the Pyramid (I don’t remember the dollar amount at the moment)? Or Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?

  5. Somewhere on YouTube there’s a video about the guy who figured out how to hack Press Your Luck. Awesome.

  6. BTD Greg’s right — Millionaire was a HUGE, HUGE hit. Easily more popular in terms of viewers than any of those.

  7. That top 5 list is pretty good. Though, I’ve never really been a fan of the Price is Right, and I’ve never seen To Tell the Truth.

I’d totally put that Match Game in there. And, although it may be hard to admit, I always thought Millionaire was really fun. I’m a sucker for that Regis.

  8. As a child, I was a fan of Sale of the Century. Seemed like a poor-man’s Jeopardy. I also have liked Win Ben Stein’s money.

I’ve never cared much for Family Feud. Maybe because all the hosts have been annoying to me.

In any case I can’t argue with the top two.

  9. Well, I kept going back and forth between “Top 5 Greatest…” and “Top 5 Most Entertaining…” and decided on greatest (defined by whatever your personal criteria for “great”) because I don’t find Jeopardy! entertaining as I find it engaging. That being said, Millionaire certainly deserves to be up there but I’d say at spot #6.

  10. I used to love “Press My Luck.”

“Price is Right” is good if your wearing your Depends.

Family Feud is usually quite entertaining and has caused some of the better gaffes.

MTV has had some good ones, my favorite being “Idiot Savants” with the best trivia category–”Cheese or Disease”?

  11. Street Smarts is one of my faves. I’ve liked Lingo the few times I’ve come across it. Jeopardy! and The Price Is Right are a solid #1 and #2.

  12. As long as Jeopardy is number one, I won’t sweat the rest of the list.

But I think Millionaire should be on it (higher than #6).

If there are people who remember the Match Game, maybe some of you remember Eye Guess. Contestants were shown eight possible answers for 10 seconds, then were asked questions and had to identify the window behind which the correct answer had appeared. My favorite sequence went like this:

    Q. Where do you see a bunch of dummies sitting around? (Correct answer. A department store window.)
Constestant’s response (which I totally saw coming). Republican headquarters.

That one stood alone until Ken Jennings’ famous “What is a ho’?” response.

  13. Am I the only one who watches the Game Show Network? Match Game reruns!

  14. What — no love for “Deal/No Deal”?

Seriously — is that the dumbest game show ever? I mean at least it takes a bit of school to guess the words and phrase on Wheel.

There is absolutely no strategy or knowledge involved with the game. Or at least my 5 minute sampling of it suggests that. I suppose if you were a statistician, you could calculate odds. But the odds are already calculated for you right with the what’s-his-name who changes the amount of the deal?

My favorite game show is still the Price is Right. Mainly because I love seeing the two winners reactions to the showcases at the end. You can see them thinking “A dinette set and a set of luggage!? — where’s the *@&#@#*$! car!”

    Comment by William Morris — September 25, 2006 @ 1:34 pm

  15. But the odds are already calculated for you right with the what’s-his-name who changes the amount of the deal?

The banker surely calculates the odds, but his offer does not necessarily reflect them. Most of the time, the offer is well below the expected value of the contestant’s case. I watch the show occasionally to see if I can detect any relationship between a contestant’s characteristics and how quickly the banker moves toward a fair deal.

  16. Thinking it over, I have to agree with SG that you are missing Hollywood Squares. Yes it is stupid, but what would b-list entertainers that need to promote something this week do if it weren’t for that show?

  17. What about “Remote Control”? It launched the career of Adam Sandler, after all.

    Comment by BTD Greg — September 25, 2006 @ 9:45 pm

  18. 1. Jeopardy. I saw a taping of it once. Alex Trebeck wears this amazing amount of pancake mak-up.

    2. Millionaire

    3. Pyramid

    4. Family Fued

    5. Sale of the Century.

I kind of like Wheel of Fortune. What’s so wrong with it?

  19. 1.) Jeopardy
    2.) Family Feud
    3.) The Dating Game
    4.) The Newlywed Game
    5.) The Liar’s Club

Millionaire, Deal-or-No-Deal are just too slow.

Numbers 2 thru 5 on my list are for entertainment value.

Remember Tic Tac Dough? Or Joker’s Wild?

What was that show that was kind of a Millionaire rip off that featured a British woman host with glasses and short hair that was kind of rude? I liked that one better than Millionaire.

  20. You are…the Weakest Link! I liked that one, too.

  21. ooo! Make Me Laugh was also pretty fun.

  22. Ok, what about that game show from Japan they show on cable tv at night?? They dub in all the English, and it’s TERRIBLE, but I’ve never laughed so hard as when I watched it with my brothers. People have to do insane things…

Anyone know what I’m talking about??
