Name These Soft Rock Tunes
I’ve spliced together clips of songs to see how many you can all identify. This batch of songs are all clips of (brilliant) soft rock tunes, mostly from the 70’s.
I’ll give you a day or two to make your guesses, then I’ll post the answers. There are clips from 17 songs this time. I’ll be surprised if all of these songs aren’t at least somewhat familiar to you. Some of the artists might be harder to recall than others, though.
Song clips are in the radio.blog: “Name These Soft Rock Tunes”
NOTE: You might want to listen and make your guesses before reading the comments, or other people’s guesses might spoil your fun.
UPDATE: I’ll paste the answers in down below. If you haven’t had a chance to make your guesses, don’t click on the “more” link until you have!

Don’t feel too bad, this is the kind of stuff you hear played everywhere you go. In fact a couple of these songs I heard recently in a grocery store and went straight home to download them.

You rule, Christine. Your husband will probably know #1. #8 is a more obscure artist.
Can’t believe no one’s got #14 yet.
Comment by Susan M — August 28, 2006 @ 7:12 pm
#1 is David Gates, Bread (don’t know the title)
#8 is Gerry Rafferty, “Right Down The Line,” ?
Comment by D. Fletcher — August 28, 2006 @ 7:19 pm
#14, Andy Gibb? or the BeeGees?
Comment by D. Fletcher — August 28, 2006 @ 7:22 pm
Oh man, all I got was Supertramp (Logical Song). Does that make me cool or pathetic?
Comment by Rusty — August 28, 2006 @ 8:28 pm
Rusty: cool.
Comment by Tom — August 28, 2006 @ 9:55 pm
Rusty,
It means you haven’t spent nearly enough time in elevators. Of course, you probably should have known Sister Golden Hair as well, but it is probably better to miss that one than to get any of the rest right.

Susan waits until Jr. Supergenius Burrito and Jr. Supergenius Churro are born to bring on this, the greatest challenge thus far? I cry foul!
Comment by Supergenius — August 28, 2006 @ 11:44 pm

Me, D. and Christine must be the only children of the 70’s around here. Where’s chronicler when you need her?
Comment by Susan M — August 29, 2006 @ 8:22 am
I am dealing with some serious self-loathing for not recognizing Sister Golden Hair. Also, the first group must be Bread (which you can’t really have a soft rock anthology without including)
Comment by HP — August 29, 2006 @ 8:29 am
There seems to be a consensus that Bread did the first song, but nobody has named the song yet. I think it is “Diary”.
When I spent 3 weeks in Manila back in the late 90s, they played Bread songs on the radio as often as they played new stuff.
Comment by Last Lemming — August 29, 2006 @ 10:24 am
I am a child of the seventies, but the household I grew up in was strictly Motown.
I think I only heard easy listening at my babysitter’s house.
By the time I started buying my own music, disco, punk & new wave had edged easy listening to a dark corner.
You know what I heard in the grocery store yesterday?
A musak version of Strip by Adam Ant. *shudders*
Comment by Jennifer — August 29, 2006 @ 11:30 am
The first music I ever bought for myself was an Air Supply single. The second was an REO Speedwagon single. The third was U2’s WAR album.

When do you get to see the actual list? I need to know the ones I couldn’t get! Wheeeeeeeee!
Comment by Christine V — September 1, 2006 @ 10:53 am
Oops! Sorry, I forgot to post the answers. They’re posted now! Any requests on songs from this batch for me to post on the radio.blog? haha
Comment by Susan M — September 1, 2006 @ 11:38 am
GAH! How did I miss Andy Gibb?!?! I feel shame. Thanks Susan, that little test made my week.
Comment by Christine — September 1, 2006 @ 9:34 pm
The only songs that sounded familiar to me were 4 and 5, yet I knew I’d heard many of them before. This type of music not being my cup of tea, I just didn’t recognize the less-recognizable bits of “The Piña Colada Song”, “Annie’s Song”, and “Top of the World”. But if I’d been able to make out the words in 2, I think would have got it. Fortunately, I wasn’t.
Score: 0
