Band Spotlight: BOAT
This week’s Band Spotlight features BOAT, a Seattle band I just discovered and love. Read on to learn more about them, in their own words.

Band name:
BOAT
Band members:
D. Crane, J. Goodman, M. McKEnzie, I. Bone (touring member)
Websites:

Formed in:
2004-05
Location:
Seattle, WA
Genre/sound:
Homemade Sloppy Pop
For fans of:
all types of homemade music
Best description you’ve heard of your music:
sloppy pop/fuzzed out children’s songs
Describe your best (or worst!) live performance:
our worst performance was at a place called the Brainwash Cafe in San Francisco…it is a laundromat and no one was there to see music….and they only had one microphone that didn’t really work…the laundry machines were as loud as we were.

Releases:
Songs That You Might Not Like (Magic Marker Records 2006)—-After All (Homemade/Oh No Disaster! Records 2005)—-Life Is a Shipwreck (Homemade/Oh No Disaster! Records 2005)
Tell us about the song(s) we’ve posted to the radio.blog:
These are two songs off of our debut LP for Magic Marker Records. They are about 2 minutes long. Are they hits? You decide!
How did the band form/meet?
we met through a strange group of coincidences and a mutual love of homemade music
What bands have you been in previously?
J. Goodman (Lands Farther East), M. McKenzie (Clandestine Crush, UPSTATE, Hot Josh and the Boys), D. Crane (Julius, The Dukes), I. Bone (Darling Chemicalia, Koch’s Postulates, Clandestine Crush, Deluxe)

Describe your songwriting process:
We work quick……we use a four track…we have fun
What’s your local music scene like?
There are a lot of bands in Seattle. Very few of them play quiet enough so you can hear the words……we want to hear the words. Seattle has been very good to us….we have gotten to play a lot of cool venues.
Anything else we should know about you:
we are 3/4 vegetarian, and prefer diet soda to regular soda.

“are they hits? You decide!”
OK — I will…. they ARE hits. What a great sounding band! Enough of this LP stuff, I’d buy a full album of Boat.

Like a Shins-meets-TMBG vibe from these guys? What’s their sound? ‘Sloppy pop’ doesn’t quite do it…

I think “lo-fi” fits.

Very cool stuff. Where’d you hear about these guys Susan?

I came across them via this blog here. I think.

SUSAN!! You won’t believe this, but I just saw Boat on July 12 at the Rickshaw Stop in San Francisco. They were GREAT. Too bad no one was there to see them! We bought their CD and they gave away free buttons ala 1979. My husband is currently wearing a Boat button on his lapel
. Why did I go see Boat that night? Because my husband OPENED for them at the Rockshaw Stop!! My husband is CIA Acid Party, and they were great. (plug plug). Anyway, Boat was a total riot and the closest thing I can related them to is something like when I saw the Presidents of the United States. Same fun feeling and great poppy songs. Kind of like the Three O’Clock a little too (from the 80′s).
Thanks for spotlighting Boat, because we just discovered them a few weeks ago! When DH found out he was playing with them, we downloaded their songs off their myspace and we’ve been listening to them for the last month. Super!

Oops. That’s not Rockshaw Stop, that Rickshaw. Rickshaw Stop. Go to the Rickshaw Stop. It’s a terrific club.

Very cool, Meems! Is CIA Acid Party a band? Or is your husband a DJ?
Comment by Susan M — August 4, 2006 @ 8:13 am
Very, VERY cool, meems! Why don’t we get a couple of tracks from your husband’s band??
Comment by Supergenius — August 4, 2006 @ 9:38 am
CIA Acid party is my husband and it’s a band. It’s him on a guitar tuned to sitar tuning, playing psychedelic Indian-style riffs, with a bass player, a weird Indian drone called a shirti box, and a tabla player. Kind of a pick up band, as we live in Malaysia! But, he should have the CD of the live recording off the board up soon– maybe on his myspace
. It’s not for the timid or weak of heart though — it’s pretty experimental – ha! Just a warning! I’ll let you know when he posts it.
I’m off to the airport in one hour. See you in Kuala Lumpur. Bye America!
