  5. I have to say that of all foreigners speaking (or singing) in English, Brazilians have the least attractive accent. This girl’s accent is pretty well obscured by noise, but it’s there.

    I love Caetano Veloso and Astrud Gilberto, but I don’t like it when they sing in English.

  6. What? Half the appeal of Astrud’s impromptu translation of Garota de Ipanema is the accent.

    I agree that many bands from Brazil need to leave English alone, unless they’re doing covers, but it works well in some genres. Brazilian reggae often features English lyrics and that isn’t nearly as jarring as some other stuff that you hear down there.

  7. I don’t know Tom. Caetano and Astrud G. in English sound good to me. Even better: Marisa Monte. Her cover of George Harrison’s Give Me Love on Barulho Bom is particularly nice.

    Of course, there are major exceptions. Unless you want a laugh I would stay away (far away) from Milton Nascimento’s stuff in English. His “Beat It” here is particularly, well, bad. And I am a Nascimento fan.

  9. CSS (which I first thought was taken from ‘cascading style sheet’ — shows what a geek I am) are getting hyped over at pitchfork right now, but this is the only song of theirs that I’ve hear. Is the rest of their stuff any good?
    BTW, Tom, I think that the crappy accent adds to the alure of the sound. It kind of reminds me of the Sugarcubes’ quirky directly-translated-from-Icelandic lyrics.
