This week: I dunno, some kinda West Coast vibe thing?

    1. This really is a tough battle. Sorry guys! “Buddy Holly” is probably one of the best pop songs ever done, RHCP has a flavor I dig, and Beach Boys… well, they’re the BEACH BOYS!

    2. This isn’t fair at all. The worst song off Weezer’s debut album, the best song off the Coneheads soundtrack (dim praise, that), and then…one of the all time great rock singles ever — the closest Brian Wilson got to his “teenage symphonies to God” and the opener to what is generally considered one of the top two or three rock albums in history.

      Comment by Greg — May 5, 2006 @ 11:50 am

    3. Greg, I know what you mean, tho I disagree about it being the worst song off Weezer’s debut.

    4. Top two or three rock albums in history? I think you’re exaggerating.

But yeah I’m voting for the Beach Boys.

    5. Did I ever mention how alive I think T-dome is? Alive and kicking.

This is a tough one. I don’t know that the Beach Boys are a shoe-in.

    6. Susan: I just said “what it generally considered one of the top two or three” and I was actually doing the opposite of exaggerating. According to acclaimedmusic.net, Pet Sounds is the music critics’ consensus #1 album of all time, with Revolver, Nevermind, Velvet Underground and Nico, and Exile on Main Street behind it.

      Comment by Greg — May 5, 2006 @ 12:23 pm

    7. Geeze Louise. Any critic who puts Nevermind up there is automatically discounted IMO. :)

I figured you were talking generally considered by *critics*, but you just said generally.

    8. Hah, I knew that the site’s high ranking of Nirvana would kill its credibility with you. (I think that album gets more credit for its effect on pop culture than its quality.) But the site basically just runs a very complex algorithm that takes into account nearly every music review ever published, and nearly every article ever published rating albums and songs, and then spits out the rankings.

By the way, the site lists “Buddy Holly” as the 10th best song of 1994, and the 570th best all time. It is Weezer’s highest ranked song, contrary to my tastes.

    9. I liked “Soul to Squeeze” better when it was called “Under the Bridge.”

    10. Is that a hook I see in your musical bait?

      Sure sounds like one.

    15. You gotta be KIDDING me- Pet Sounds as the all time best album??? Excuse me while I compose myself. I have never heard anything so absurd. Rant over.

Because I loathe the BB, and the RHCP are flippin innovative genius’, it’s clear where my vote goes this week…

    16. Beach Boys - Great,
      Weezer - Good,
Red Hot Chili Peppers - Crap, Crap, Crappity, Crap in their underwear

This is, of course, just my opinion.

    20. I would’ve like to have seen a real surf music t-dome, but Steve just isn’t that adventurous.

      Comment by Susan M — May 5, 2006 @ 4:46 pm

    21. I just didn’t want Greg to cry any more over the Beach Boys.

      Comment by Supergenius — May 5, 2006 @ 5:05 pm

    22. Easy call — Beach Boys.

Look at is this way: Which of these songs do you think our grandchildren would be most impressed with? Which will history look back and remember with reverence? The Beach Boys will win that longview battle hands down in my opinion. 40 years later that work by Brian W. and the boys still sounds great.

      Comment by Geoff J — May 5, 2006 @ 5:13 pm

    23. I guess I should have listed RHCP under the hidden-guilty pleasures post according to you all!!

Plllllllltttttt! Big ol Raspberries. I still love them, and the BB just recorded the same song over and over….yeachhh!

      Comment by tracy m — May 5, 2006 @ 5:15 pm

    24. I like Weezer a lot more than the Red Hot Chili Peppers, but I also happen to think that “Soul to Squeeze” is the best song the Chili Peppers ever released. RHCP win by a whisker.

As for the BB, (and I know this is Kulturblog heresy) I just don’t get them.

    25. I love how the voters are so contradictory on this one. Ahh the joys of t-dome.

    26. “Wouldn’t It Be Nice” is a very special song. I agree with those who say it wins hands down. Not that I don’t find Weezer or the Beach Boys interesting.

      Comment by danithew — May 5, 2006 @ 10:47 pm

    27. who was it who produced that Weezer album?

      hmmm… let me think…

      Comment by Jennifer — May 7, 2006 @ 5:11 pm

    28. Jennifer, Ric Ocasek produced the blue album… why?

Spike Jonze directed the Buddy Holly video, if that’s any clue….
