TV: The Reason for the Season
Via Pop Candy I learned that today is the first day of TV Turnoff Week. In commemoration, I’d like to share my list of shows that I always, without fail, make a point of setting my DVR to record on a weekly basis. Here’s my Must-Record List:
- 24 - Fox, Tuesday, 9/8 Eastern/Central
- House - Fox, Tuesday, 9/8 Eastern/Central
- Lost - ABC, Wednesday, 9/8 Eastern/Central
- The Office - NBC, Thursday 9:30/8:30 Eastern/Central
- Veronica Mars - UPN, Tuesday 9/8 Eastern/Central (recorded during the Saturday re-broadcastâ€â€check your local listingsâ€â€as it always conflicts with either Lost or House)
- Avatar: The Last Airbender - Nickelodeon, Friday 8/7 Eastern/Central
That’s itâ€â€five hours of can’t-miss weekly programming, including commercials (which I flip past). I’ll catch other shows now and then, but these are the shows I queue up on my DVR for regular viewing.
What shows are you going to make a point of watching in an act of quiet rebellion against the officious sanctimony of others?

I am watching 7th Heaven right now, as an act of rebellion against good taste and common sense. I am regretting my choice.

Here’s what I have my DVR set to record:
Dancing With the Stars (the season’s over though)
The Office
American Idol
Prison Break
Criminal Minds (my new fave–it’s so awesomely bad)
The Colbert Report
The Daily Show
The Showbiz Show
Extreme Makeover Home Edition
Modern Marvels
Shows I record but don’t really watch very much:
Medium
Invasion
Flip This House
I’m sure I’m leaving off some important ones. The kids also record Futurama and a bunch of cartoons, including Airbender.

Avatar: The Last Airbender - Nickelodeon, Friday 8/7 Eastern/Central
Hehe… I really dig this one too. I was surprised to see it on your list.

I should probably mention that 24 keeps getting worse and worse with each episode this season. I’m up to an eyerolls-per-minute ration about about 1.5. Only about four more hours to go, though, so I’ll probably stick with it.

I’m getting to be more and more of a lazy TV watcher as the season progresses. I’ve given up on 24 and let Greg watch it after I go to bed. I only watch the Office if it looks really, really funny. I’m pretty much down to Lost, Veronica Mars and House, as long as we have a new one recorded.
I think Turn Off TV Week deserves a new episode of Lost. Do we get one this week?

Avatar is awesome. My sons love it! (I do to.) Such un-drek cartoonage.

No new Lost this week. I’m so sad!
Can I loudly protest and keep the thing on MORE than usual? Hmmm…
TiVo: Grey’s Anatomy, Prison Break, Am. Idol, Gilmore Girls, Scrubs, Lost, Earl, The Office, ER (out of habit more than that I enjoy it anymore), Amazing Race, Survivor and The Soup

I turned on Noggin this morning and have left it on continuously. I even left it on when I went for my doctor’s appt. I think I’ll go ahead and leave it on all day. I never do this, and it’s kind of fun. Maybe my two year old will start liking it after a few days of this.

My DVR records 24, CSI Miami, American Idol, Alias, Lost, CSI, Without a Trace, Veronica Mars. Plus Avatar for the kids and Jon Stewart, Colbert Report and Bill Maher for Ronan!

The only show that I actually try to watch is Scrubs. The rest of my TV watching is a sad combination of trite, tired garbage. Howie Mandel, anyone?
Comment by Greg — April 25, 2006 @ 12:30 pm
Rebecca,
Don’t forget Charlie Rose, Farred Zakaria, and Austin City Limits.
Comment by Ronan — April 25, 2006 @ 1:12 pm
The only one I tape if I’m not around is Prison Break.

We have a TiVo season pass for a ton of shows, but these are the only ones I really care about:
Lost, Prison Break, My Name is Earl, Top Chef, The Office, Scrubs, Desperate Housewives (disappointing lately), and The Colbert Report. We also tivo The Soup and Best Week Ever, but they’re on too often to have a season pass for.
I’ve officially given up on Alias.

Bill, Flanders, et al:
I recently saw a preview for an upcoming Prison Break episode and it made me really, really want to watch. Is it one of those shows you need to follow from the beginning to enjoy? And is it as funny as the preview made it look?

Always “Gilmore Girls”, although probably not for much longer since main creative force Amy Sherman-Palladino is leaving the show.

Word up, R.W. Sad, sad news.

Prison Break is probably better from the beginning, but you should be able to jump in and not be too lost. It’s gotten really over-the-top now, if that’s what you mean by funny. It’s always been over-the-top, but now it’s just ridiculous. I love it.

I am down to Lost. Between all the conspiracy theories, I don’t have time for other TV.

I mourn with those that mourn the loss of ASP.
It’s amazing how at the end of an episode of Gilmore Girls you can always tell if she is going to have the writing credit for the episode. The writing is still great when she doesn’t, but the episodes that she writes just sparkle.
Required viewing for me these days is down to:
Gilmore Girls
Scubs
My Name is Earl
The Office
I will sometimes watch the Simpsons and Family Guy.
