Playlist Thunderdome, Week 19
The Carpenters CRUSHED the Captain & Tennille in last week’s post, thereby inserting possibly the worst song ever into our playlist.
This week is better, I guarantee.

I know I’m newer around here, so I rarely comment on these, but Boston’s More than a Feeling? Aaaah. Of course, it’s all emotional tie-ins for me, but that gets my vote.

This is a tough one. These are all great songs. But I’m gonna have to go with Bad Company. Paul Rodgers has one of the very best voices in rock.
Although I must say Boston’s singer is underrated. I don’t even know his name. But he sure makes it seem effortless.

The problem with Bad Company is that the lyrics just aren’t that great.

Nice job, SG! Too close to call today, I’ll have to sleep on it
/gut reaction is to go with Kansas

I had planned to re-write the lyrics and do a version called “Feel Like Making Lunch” with a former band but never actually got around to it…
Baby, when I think about you
I think about lu-uuuuuunch…

Yeah, you probably could’ve chosen a better Bad Co song.

As for the my vote… meh. Seventies corporate rock can be fun enough if used sparingly. I’ll take Boston I guess.

Trivia for the day: Forget the Pixies — “More Than a Feeling” is the blueprint for “Smells Like Teen Spirit.” Listen closely!

What, no REO Speedwagon?
Comment by Russell Arben Fox — September 29, 2005 @ 3:32 pm
One of these band names is not like the others …
Comment by Dallin I — September 29, 2005 @ 3:41 pm
REO Speedwagon fits better with Foreigner and Journey.
One of my favorite band names: REO Speedealer. Only they got pressured by REO Speedwagon and had to change it to Speedealer.

For me these songs are all in the category of ’songs that are fun to sing along to (or do karoake to).’ And hands down, the most fun of the bunch is “Feel Like Makin’ Love.”

I’m with Carl on “Aqua Teen Hunger Force:” “The greatest song ever–More Than a Feeling!”
Comment by R.W. Rasband — September 29, 2005 @ 7:43 pm
I’ve tried to decide how to distinguish between these bands. The main difference is that I have listened to an entire album by Boston and enjoyed it. I can’t say the same thing about the other two. I’m pretty sure I wouldn’t want to listen to an entire Kansas album — “Carry On My Wayward Son” irritates me. I probably should give Bad Co. more of a chance … I just haven’t ever gotten around to it.
So my vote is with “More Than A Feeling.”

Oh heck! This race is almost too close to call. Great choice of three good bands. This one won’t be a wlkover like last week for certain.
I nfelt the same way Susan about Bad Company’s singer - great voice! Then Boston. We own all of the albums, vinyl. And then Kansas has gotten all of our money on vinyl, cassette, cd, dvd (concert).
I read the lineup and the first song to go off in my head was Kansas. I had to choose them.
Geoff J loved your “Feel like Making Lunch” LOL!
And yes, REO goes way better with Susan’s suggestions.

I am opposed to Bad Company on the grounds that most rock bands that have a song named after the band (or is it the other way around) are lame. Bad Company is not an exception.
So that leaves Boston and Kansas, both of which are great, but I’ve gotta go with Boston.

Whoah nelly! This is one of Steve’s better thunderdomes. I’m only the third vote for Bad Company?! As always, people are voting for different reasons. For instance, danithew has a good point in that I’ve listened to and liked more Boston music than music of the other two bands combined (which is kinda funny in one way since Boston has like half the album quantity of either of the other bands).
But having said that, this is about the song right? I’ve heard “More Than A Feeling” sooooo many times and would put it as the lowest of the three (its lasting quality isn’t that high for me), though again, I’d put the band in first place. Kansas, eh. They can be fun.
All in all, though, “Feel Like Making Love” is the song that would be the least likely to make me think about changing the radio station.

Paul Rodgers = best voice in rock. Next to Freddie.

This was a toughie. Love the wayward son song, but since I know only the one or two lines of the chorus, I’m gonna have to pick More Than a Feeling. Wait, now that I think of it, I don’t really know the words to that song either. Is that the song about Marianne? Bummer - I already voted.

Elisabeth, in case you don’t know–you can listen to the songs in the radio.blog player. It’s near the bottom of the left column on this page.
Comment by Susan M — October 1, 2005 @ 4:38 pm
Thanks, Susan! I forgot about that.

Well, I missed the boat, but I do want to protest your wasting Kansas’ entry with their worst song. There are many Kansas songs that are better than any song by either of the other groups, but of this selection, More Than a Feeling deserved to win.
