whachya readin’?

by Karen Hall

I’m fascinated by others’ web surfing habits.  If you’re like me, you have your core sites, those places you keep an eye on, and scroll through often, perhaps daily.  I would imagine that every list is something like a fingerprint.  But maybe not, maybe I’m an unoriginal member of the horde….you be the judge, oh, and leave your own list…

blogs (this is easy!):  www.bycommonconsent.com is clearly the coolest blog in town.  I also check up on www.timesandseasons.org and www.feministmormonhousewives.org.  I check out the other blogs in the ‘nacle if someone points out something interesting, but those are my core three.

news:  I never watch CNN, but I check out their site several times a day:  www.cnn.com.  I also keep up on www.washingtonpost.com.  If I actually want an objective and quality source, I go to news.bbc.co.uk.  I also keep up with www.deseretnews.com, and www.sltrib.com, my hometown newspapers.

entertainment:  I am absolutely addicted to www.eonline.com.  Such lovely salacious gossip.  I’m also a huge fan of twin sites:  www.fametracker.com and www.televisionwithoutpity.com.  They are the snark geniuses of the web.  Of course, our own kulturblog has its own charm, and I’m a fan.

Okay, that’s my core list.  Your turn.

  1. I am also deeply addicted to TWOP and Fametracker. They combine with Schlock Mercenary to form my unholy internet trinity.

  2. Has anyone ever checked out “Go Fug Yourself”? It’s hilarious.

  3. I spend most of my day posting to my own board, an EZBoard called Sondheim and Us. I read the Mormon blogs, Times and Seasons, and By Common Consent. I often look into New Order Mormons.

Home Theater Forum, AVS Forum, Broadway.com, and TalkinBroadway.com, are my other homes. I read the news at Yahoo, and also The New York Times. I buy stuff from Amazon and DVDEmpire. I read Glenn Erickson’s movie and DVD reviews at DVD Savant.com

    That’s pretty much it.

  4. I subscribe to all the blogs I read via Bloglines.com, so I just visit my Bloglines page to check out blogs. Except Kulturblog, I check this more regularly to read comments.

There’s an indie music web forum I occasionally hang out on, drivingmusic.net, full of indie college kids that make me feel really old.

I check Flickr.com out pretty regularly (my page: http://www.flickr.com/photos/whenigodeaf/)

And that’s about it I guess.

  6. Here is a plug for AML-List, the on-line mail forum for the Association for Mormon Letters. Just go to http://www.www.aml-online.org/list/index.html, click on “Current Message Archive”, and you can read some of the most interesting discussion on the net of popular culture from some Latter-day Saints’ point of view.

  8. Like Susan Malmrose, I use Bloglines. I’m subscribed to tons of RSS feeds. I try to have a sense of what’s going on around the ‘Nacle in general. Outside the ‘Nacle, here are some blogs I really like:

AlexKing.org — WordPress plugin developer and site of themes — has an interesting “Around the web” feature from time to time

Arts and Letters Daily - links to thought-provoking or interesting articles from all over the place

    Drawn!: the Illustration Blog

No Direction Home — perhaps my favorite photoblog — beautiful pictures all the time

PhotoMatt — Matt Mullenweg is the founder and lead developer of WordPress

Wooster Collective — lots and lots of photographs of interesting street art

    FOOF (Friends of other Faiths):

Dervish — favorite Muslim blogger — hasn’t written in awhile and recently shut down comments — I hope she is ok

    DovBear — favorite Jewish blogger

Jimmy Akin — favorite Catholic blogger — he might post on a topic of interest to us sometime soon … crossing my fingers a little bit

  10. I, too read a large group of blogs, as well as reading Orson Scott Card’s website a couple of times a week (www.hatrack.com), Snopes’ what’s new pages, junkscience.com’s articles and headlines.

As blogs go, I have LDS Blogs, Right-wing-wacko blogs, Tivo blogs, reality tv, things like that.

I also have a dozen or more Google News alerts for breaking news about the LDS church, Orson Scott Card, Videogames, and others.

I guess I live in kind of the ‘push’ culture they were talking about a few years ago, because whenever I’m at the computer, one of these sources is ususally updated with new stories or entries.

For my complete blogroll, see this: http://www.bloglines.com/public/Measure

  11. Back when I watched tv, I would read TeeVee. Best writing about tv I’ve seen out there. They’ve dropped off in the past couple of years, but still worth checking out.

Duke Basketball Report is the greatest fan-run college basketball site around. Just ask Allison.

Speaking of Allison, here’s her blog, where you can find the stuff she doesn’t cross-post here.

Homestar Runner has dropped off a bit in the home-run/strikeout ratio, but is still an excellent source of good, clean fun.

Sometime-Kulturblog commenter Nathan Shumate’s blog Tachyon City is an always interesting peek into the mind of an underappreciated lunatic genius.

Rotten Tomatoes is where I decide how to waste my Friday nights.

I read the print version of The Independent Weekly, our local alternative newsweekly, but for those of you who don’t live in the Triangle, I provide the link to this most excellent publication. High-quality writing all around.

Bored? Try i-am-bored for amusing time-wasters.

Liberals should definitely check out World Net Daily to see how the other side sees the world.

For homeschooling discussion, the Sonlight boards and the Well-Trained Mind boards are happening places.

  12. I try to keep up with Slate; there’s always something interesting on it, especially the Explainer.

I also read Overheard in New York obsessively (but be warned it is usually extremely vulgar, just like New Yorkers themselves).

I also enjoy Go Fug Yourself.

    Comment by NFlanders — August 31, 2005 @ 1:55 pm

  13. Blogs/Web:
Go Fug Yourself is the funniest blog in the world. I also like the Onion (right now, there’s a great opinion piece by a goat that had me laughing so hard my daughter came running to see what was up). Kulturblog is far and away my favorite bloggernacle site. Fortean Times and the Anomalist are good for a dose of news whackiness. Duke Basketball Report is good, although their forums have deteriorated lately. Begging to Differ is good. I like Google News for everything else.

    TV:
I almost never watch TV. Watching more TV has been a New Year’s resolution of mine for two years running, and I’m sad to say it will make another run this year for the top of my list.

    Books:
My strategy is to grab whatever has an interesting cover from the “New” shelf at the library and run to the front desk. If I have time (that is, if my toddler boy’s antics aren’t yet earning me hostile glares from elderly patrons), I may actually go look for something that’s been highly recommended.

    Magazines:
Anything with a garden on the cover.

  14. Oh, oops. I skimmed the initial post and somehow it didn’t register that we’re limiting the discussion to surfing habits (I, uh, actually had a poopy kid wrestling me for the mouse). So feel free to ignore everything else from my comment.

  15. no problem Allison, you may have inspired a new blog post!

  16. Am I the only one who LOVES the sugar beet?

Heres a sample from the current issue’s View From the Street:

“As a woman, what would YOU do if you had the priesthood?”

“Depends. Would we be bound by that pesky unrighteous dominion scripture?”

“Same thing my husband does - nothing.”

“Iguess I’d ask a male for permission to use it.”

  18. um, guys. I posted a link to Rightthinkinggirl’s site. She has had some major problems and had a dear person pass away also gave birth to a preemie three days ago. She’s in a bad way now and the first post at her site can be pretty brutal. Just a warning in case you stop by, just wanted to let you know.

  19. In the bloggernacle, I consistently read BCC, T&S, DMI, Mormon Wasp, and FMH. I also check out anything that looks interesting on the Archipelago — like navel gazing at M*.

For news/politics, its the NYT, WP, AJC (my local paper), CNN (though generally only for breaking news), Yahoo Sports, Slate, Talking Points Memo, Taegan Goddard’s Political Wire, and Hotlines Wake-Up Call. I also like Daily Kos and Eschaton. Arts and Letters Daily is also a great site.

For humor, nothing beats the Onion. Fafblog is also hilarious. I would check out Comedy Central’s site were it not for the fact that I watch the Daily Show religiously on TV anyway.

I’ve also just recent discovered Post Secret. An amazing site.
