Playlist Thunderdome - Week 6
Sorry for the delay, folks, but work intervened with reality.
To recap: our last poll ended in confusion and re-voting, but ultimately Hendrix’ "Purple Haze" crushed Rush’s "Tom Sawyer", 27 votes to 8. After taking time off to heal our broken nation, I have returned to divide it.
Behold, the battle of the whitebread pseudo-rap rock songs!!!
Here’s the recap of winners:
- Elvis Costello - Allison
- Jet - Look What You’ve Done
- Talking Heads - Psycho Killer
- Guns N Roses - Paradise City
- Jimi Hendrix - Purple Haze

Oh the humanity!

Bob’s song is the reason why the other two exist, but I can’t vote against a song that has me shouting “Leonard Bernstein” halfway through it.
Comment by John C. — June 23, 2005 @ 4:52 pm
I think I’ll have to go with REM. If only because not even Michael Stipe knows all the lyrics.
Comment by Susan M — June 23, 2005 @ 4:56 pm
Man, with those two songs (REM, BNL) I’d be all set for a church dance. I know Elvis Costello’s already won a battle, but I’d also include “Pump it Up” in this category.
Comment by Dallin I — June 23, 2005 @ 5:02 pm
You missed a huge chance to throw in A Simple Desultory Philippic. Too bad. I love REM, and that song, yet I feel compelled to vote for Bob. What to do????
Comment by a random John — June 23, 2005 @ 5:19 pm
Dallin, that’s why I didn’t include Costello. But I dunno, I think he’d lose against Bob/REM.
Comment by Steve Evans — June 23, 2005 @ 5:32 pm
“He’s so unhip that
When you say Dylan, he thinks you’re talking about Dylan Thomas
Whoever he was
The man ain’t got no culture”
Comment by Bryce I — June 23, 2005 @ 5:55 pm
After some soul searching I voted for REM. Forgive me, Bob.

Can’t I write in We Didn’t Start the Fire?
Comment by Matt — June 23, 2005 @ 10:52 pm
The BNL song picked pretty much sucks compared to either the rest of their music or the other songs listed. Otherwise, that leaves us with a classic case of “Artist vs. Song,” as most everyone would rather listen to the REM song, though most everyone would probaby say Bob Dylan was the better artist, if cornered.
Comment by Bob Caswell — June 24, 2005 @ 11:12 am
“most everyone would rather listen to the REM song”
really? I dunno about that, Bob…
Comment by Steve Evans — June 24, 2005 @ 12:04 pm
Well for me the REM and Dylan songs carry a lot of memories, and the REM song has better memories than the Dylan song. So I went with REM.
Comment by Susan M — June 24, 2005 @ 12:34 pm
Steve, yeah, you’re right, I made somewhat of a blanket statement. I don’t have much to back myself up, but within the crowd I’ve always been growing up, Dylan was classic but REM was enjoyable (meaning that both artists could be both characteristics but each was more the one than the other, if that makes sense).
Comment by Bob Caswell — June 24, 2005 @ 12:53 pm
But Steve, how long have you been listening to Barenaked Ladies? Having them represented in Playlist Thunderdome with “One Week” is downright offensive. I’m not even Canadian, and I had their first album before their second and their second before their third, etc, etc. You pretty much picked their worst radio-played song.
I hope you have more in the works for them. You could have at least picked “Pinch Me,” if you were trying to go for more current, though “The Flag,” “Am I the Only One?” and “When I Fall” would have been far superior choices as well from their first three albums respectively, not to mention the all time classic “If I Had a Million Dollars.”
Comment by Bob Caswell — June 24, 2005 @ 1:11 pm
Easy choice. Bob Dylan all the way for me.
Comment by danithew — June 24, 2005 @ 1:11 pm
Bob you’re right, it’s not their best, but I was trying to find songs in a similar vein. And I hate “We Didn’t Start the Fire.”
Comment by Steve Evans — June 24, 2005 @ 1:31 pm
I was kidding about We Didn’t Start the Fire.
Best BNL song: The Old Apartment.
Comment by Matt — June 24, 2005 @ 1:58 pm
Look, at least this way there won’t be any tears. remember the last Thunderdome??
Comment by Steve Evans — June 24, 2005 @ 2:11 pm
Steve, you can’t please anyone any of the time.
I think “When I Fall” is a brilliant song. But Steve was going for the white-guy-rap thing here.
Comment by Susan M — June 24, 2005 @ 2:24 pm
What, no Rex Harrison?
Comment by Bryce I — June 24, 2005 @ 2:33 pm
I vote for the Ladies. There’s a famous story about a record executive who saw them in concert before they were famous and said he liked them but they were “too white” to be a commercial success: a comment that still bugs the living hell out of me for reasons I can’t possibly fathom.
Comment by R.W. Rasband — June 25, 2005 @ 10:55 pm
I’m going with REM, just because I’m an REM nut. (Or was, before they started sucking.) “One Week” is the song that killed BNL in a lot of ways. Dylan’s Dylan, take him or leave him. I mostly leave him. I’m just glad you didn’t put that INXS song up.
Comment by BTD Greg — June 28, 2005 @ 4:58 pm
Write-in Candidate: U2’s “Numb.” Bad white rap at its worst, with the added bonus of Bono crooning like a castrati. Too much is not enough, indeed.
Comment by Alan — June 28, 2005 @ 5:02 pm
Yeah, Numb was on the list, but it was just too horrible to actually listen to.
Comment by Steve Evans — June 28, 2005 @ 5:06 pm
Oh you poor souls. So lost that you can’t see the high culture mockery artistry of Numb. You poor souls, brainwashed by the K-Mart generation.
Comment by HL Rogers — June 30, 2005 @ 12:52 pm
Time for a new one, right? RIGHT? Or is this no longer going to be an every Friday for 51 weeks sort of thing?
Comment by a random John — July 1, 2005 @ 11:38 am
New one WILL be coming today! Fret not, Random John!!
Comment by Steve Evans — July 1, 2005 @ 1:12 pm

My fret grows deeper!

I know, I know… I have three songs lined up for Canada Day, but it may have to wait - I can’t figure out the server and Susan’s gone for the holiday.
